Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Review: Worth the Hype? (2024)

In 2019, it was all the rage: the Popeyes chicken sandwich. The popular fried chicken chain decided to create a signature chicken sandwich, and the hype was undeniable. Everyone wanted to try Popeyes new chicken sandwich, and in many places they were even running out before customers could get their hands on one.

Two years later, the hype has died down, but many people still consider Popeyes chicken sandwich superior to other fried chicken fast food competitors’. But has their crispy chicken sandwich stood the test of time? We’re here to give you our honest review of Popeyes famous chicken sandwich and to see if it still holds up today.

The Popeyes chicken sandwich is a fried chicken sandwich on a soft bun. It comes with pickles and mayo, although you can have them removed if you prefer.

Popeyes also has a spicy chicken sandwich, which comes with spicy chicken and a cajun mayo instead. Today, I tried the classic chicken sandwich, however.

I got the chicken sandwich combo meal, which comes with a side and a drink. For my side, I got Popeyes cajun fries – some of the best fast food french fries out there – and for my drink, I got an unsweetened iced tea.

This was my first time trying Popeyes chicken sandwich, and I haven’t actually had much else on the menu either. I ordered the combo meal and took it home to enjoy.

The chicken sandwich comes wrapped, and the fries came in a second paper bag within my larger bag. None of the bags were greasy, which is always a plus when it comes to fast food!

The chicken sandwich looks great – it comes with a pretty large piece of chicken, so you’re definitely getting a filling meal. The breading looked nice and crunchy, and it smelled delicious.

The chicken was juicy and flavorful without being too greasy. The breading gives it a great flavor and crunch, and I was impressed with the quality of the chicken itself. The chicken didn’t look or taste like a mass produced, uniform chicken patty like fast food often does.

The bun was soft and the pickles and mayo added the extra crunch and flavor it needed. Even without many toppings, this is a great chicken sandwich!

I decided to add some hot sauce to the second half of the sandwich for a little extra kick. It had enough flavor on its own, but I wanted a little heat, so I added Hank Sauce’s Herb Infused Hot Sauce.

Popeyes does offer other toppings you can add to your sandwich, so you may want to stack on extra toppings, but the flavor is there with just chicken, pickles, mayo, and the bun.

The cajun fries were the perfect side in my opinion, as they are well seasoned and cooked with the right amount of crispiness. Other side options include homestyle mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, red beans and rice, coleslaw, and biscuits.

All in all, I was impressed with Popeyes chicken sandwich – it’s an excellent fried chicken sandwich and offers great value for the price. The sandwich on its own is pretty large, and with fries it was a very filling meal.

I haven’t tried all of the competing fast food chicken sandwiches recently, but this one stands out from my memory of the others.
