Proof Men Are More Attractive As They Age? - National Laser Institute Medical Spa (2024)

While women seem to be better than men at a lot of things, it sometimes seems like men naturally age better than women. Women can be more aware of the aging process and what it means for their skin, hair, and body. At the same time, men create the impression they are not concerned about aging, and in some cases men actually believe they get more attractive as they get older.

Hollywood hunks like Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt are in their 50’s and are hotter than ever. They have worn well: smoldering confidence that can only materialize with age and being comfortable in their own skin. With all this being said, is there proof men are more attractive as they age?

Men Have Thicker Skin

Besides having facial hair, there are anatomical differences between the skin of opposite genders. Testosterone stimulation produces thicker skin, which is why a man’s skin is up to 25% thicker than their female counterparts. In addition to being thicker, a man’s skin texture is tougher. When men reach middle age their skin becomes thinner, and they start to age more rapidly.

Because women have thinner skin they are more susceptible to the adverse aging effects of the sun. On the other hand, women are more likely to be more vigilant with sunscreen, BB creams, serums, and moisturizers. This fact greatly mitigates the genetic aging disadvantages women have to deal with.

Men Have Oilier Skin

Sebum and its production also vary between the sexes. After puberty, oil production is greater in men than women. The reason is because of male androgen secretions. Before the age of 50, testosterone causes increased oil production. As a result, men’s skin may naturally age better but will also be more susceptible to adult acne.

Women have less oily skin due to estrogen dominance. Estrogen suppresses oil production. The result is drier skin which may be more vulnerable to the signs of aging including wrinkles and fine lines.

Men Have Higher Collagen Density

Regardless of age, men also have a higher collagen density than women. According to the Textbook of Cosmetic Dermatology, because collagen loss is directly related to the signs of skin aging, it has been said a woman’s skin is about 15 years older than a man’s of the same age. However, men don’t use anti-aging products or treatments as much as women, which could contribute to why the “15-year” skin age difference is not easily noticed. UV damage from the sun can add years to a man’s skin and cancel out the benefit of slowed internal aging.

MenGrow Beards

Not only does facial hair shield the skin from UV damage, it also means when men shave, they exfoliate. While women exfoliate with skin care products and dermaplaning, men exfoliate more regularly. Due to frequent shaving, most men have facial skin that’s more sensitive than women’s. This is especially the case when daily shaving is coupled with the choice to not apply a facial moisturizer regularly.

Men are Less Likely to Use an Anti-Aging Skin Care Regimen Than Women

With all of these natural masculine skin benefits, there is one caveat: Men are less likely to feel a need to use moisturizer, and men are also less likely to use it on parts of their bodies other than their faces. This means that despite being blessed genetically, men are less inclined to use sunscreen, moisturizers, and other anti-aging products.

At a certain point, men will age rapidly if they do not adopt better anti-aging skin care practices. This isn’t to say male interest in skincare or cosmetic treatments is rare, it’s just that they’re usually a little less vocal about it. Maybe therein lies the answer to our question: Men do worry about the effects of aging deep down, but they just spend less time thinking about it than women and age well as a result.
