Prospective Members - Why Sigma Nu - No Hazing (2024)

Prospective Members - Why Sigma Nu - No Hazing (1) Since its founding in 1869, Sigma Nu has been fundamentally opposed to hazing. In fact, one of the primary reasons the Fraternity’s Founders formed Sigma Nu was to protest the hazing practices that was occurring at the Virginia Military Institute at the time.

In addition to Love, Honor, and Truth, anti-hazing remains a core value of Sigma Nu. All members, regardless of age or tenure, are expected to be treated with respect and fraternal regard. Hazing is antithetical to the brotherhood each chapter is committed to creating and supporting.

Chapter members and officers are provided numerous trainings and resources in developing and providing a values-based fraternity experience free of hazing. Much of that training, including the training provided as part of the new member experience, is facilitated through the Fraternity’s L.E.A.D. (Leadership, Ethics, Achievement, Development) Program. In fact, in 2019 Sigma Nu was one of only two Greek-letter organizations to receive the prestigious EverFi Impact Award recognizing excellence in in engaging in comprehensive, evidence-based alcohol abuse, sexual assault, and hazing prevention efforts.

However, despite those significant efforts, member and chapter misconduct can still occur. Sigma Nu is committed to promptly investigating allegations of inappropriate behavior and addressing confirmed misconduct with appropriate accountability. Should you or your son become aware of potential hazing, please call the Fraternity’s Anti-Hazing Hotline at 1-888-NOT-HAZE or use our Incident Report Form.

Visit the Fraternity’s Anti-Hazing Initiative webpage to learn more about Sigma Nu’s hazing prevention efforts, including support of HazingPrevention.Org and participation in the annual National Hazing Prevention Week.
