The legendary Ralph Lauren Polo shirt became a worldwide phenomenon shortly after its launch in 1972. The name "Polo" was a referenced to the famously upper-class sport and aimed to connect Ralph Lauren's iteration of the shirt to a modern interpretation of the Polo player's lifestyle. And boy, the name has stuck. Since then, the Polo shirt and the Polo Ralph Lauren line have become synonymous with Ralph Lauren, and both are beloved by all. The shirt is a preppy staple, a streetwear signifier, and (sometimes) even a school uniform. As for the name Polo, it now lends itself to a renowned restaurant and countless musical and cultural references, to the point where even the original inspiration, the sport, takes a backseat.

Now, almost 50 years later, the Polo shirt is available as a completely customizable piece as part of Ralph Lauren's venture into on-demand manufacturing. The on-demand method is an environmentally-friendly and sustainable way of producing garments. Instead of trying to predict how many pieces will sell (and risk over-producing), each made-to-order Polo will be created especially for its buyer, exactly to their specifications. Besides eliminating over-production, the made-to-order method also helps to cut back on fabric waste, as each Polo is knitted to order, not cut and sewn.

But aside from its environmentally-improved production chain, there is the potential to really have fun with the customizations. The made-to-order Polo offers six different designs, the ability to select a color or color-blocking (including the placement of the color-blocking), and the option to add letters, words, or initials to any part of the shirt. With the possibility for hundreds of designs, you can truly have the perfect Polo shirt for any occasion. When there are options like this, why not go crazy? Perhaps seven Polos emblazoned with each day of the week is just what we need to keep our post-pandemic brains on track. The made-to-order Polos are now available at RalphLauren.com
