We have now entered a period of consultation with the small number of people affected. We will ensure they are supported with great care throughout the process, and work with them to look for suitable opportunities within the business where possible.”

Hearst UK is closing Real People magazine after 16 years. The weekly magazine, which reports on “true life stories that will leave you moved, amused, shocked, infuriated and horrified”, will print its final issue on 20 January.

The explosion of social media has also cut into the advertising market on which print magazines have traditionally depended. Online audiences have come to expect new content daily or even hourly. Casual readers are less willing to wait for a weekly or monthly print magazine to arrive in the post or on a newsstand.
People magazine had the largest audience in the United States in the final quarter of 2022, with an average monthly reach of 82.07 million people. Allrecipes ranked second with a reach of 53.11 million, followed by AARP The Magazine with a total audience of just over 52.5 million.
Demographics show that 70% of the People magazine audience are female and the average customer age is thirty eight years old. Therefore, the articles and advertisem*nts are going to be driven mostly towards a female, middle-aged audience.
On October 6, 2021, Dotdash agreed to purchase Meredith, which still owned People and sister magazines such as Entertainment Weekly, InStyle, and Chip and Joanna Gaines' Magnolia Journal, in a $2.7 billion deal. The purchase would be finalized on December 1, 2021.
