Don't be fooled by the street where all the vendors are displaying their fakes on the pavement.

It is highly illegal to buy from them and quality is easily spotted as fake anyway.

Apart from that if you are caught you could well end up paying more than double the cost of an original in fines.

It is happening on a regular basis that people are being fined.

In Italy you only buy from shops or regular market stalls any other way is breaking the law and risking the price you will pay if caught.

When I went to Rome there were street sellers on many of the popular spots...around Piazza Navona, around Castle St. Angelo etc. But as mentioned already the fines for buying these products are pretty hefty. A Norwegian boy (I think he was about 12) got caught buying a fake Rolex and the police arrested him and the family had to cough up 1000€ for the fine. So my advice...stay away from the fake products :-)

there are vendors selling fake bags all over Rome. However, they look fake and in the end if you really want a Prada or Gucci bag you can find them at a decent price at the outlets near Florence or during the twice a year sales.

It's not worth the hefty fine to buy a poor quality fake.

Those fake designers bags are everywhere so IF you really want them, I don't think you have to find them...they'll find you. I saw quite a bit of them selling on the streets, and they just lay them out on the ground. I saw them in stalls by the termini as well.

Just a precaution, if you even glance at some of these vendors (like I mistakenly did), they'll follow you trying to get you to make a deal. It was pretty intimidating.

Buy the real stuff...quality is so much better. And, you can get a 12% VAT refund if you're from the states.

I have to say that the designer handbags are EVERYWHERE! and some times they set up for 10 minutes and then the police come and they leave. Some are not good look alikes and some are very good. Here in NY there are many too, but they are much cheaper there. Many can be gotten for 10 euros by bargaining.

I know this is illegal, but it seemed like a very big practice there. Having waited in line at Gucci and spending money there, I dont think it is so bad to buy the fake if you want, but thats just my opinion and most dont feel this way.

Under the law, those bags are not to be dignified by the use of the word replica, which impies they are an homage - the proper word or counterfeit and fake.

I don't know about taking them back to England, but in Canada and the US, you stand a good chance of having them seized and at the very least paying a substantial fine for their possession. You can go to jail.

There are two things I wonder about the folks who buy and use them. Do they really think that the rest of us can't they're fake? And would they be interested in doing a job of work and having their pay packet seized from them every week? That's in essence what you're doing when you buy the fakes. You're stealing the earnings of the folks who make the real ones. I know that would make me proud.

Maybe people should fake their trip to Italy and go to Vegas. While there, maybe they could see some fake paintings and a fake gondola. Then they could buy a fake purse, take some pictures of all their fake destinations and experiences, and then post a fake trip report!!!!

My thrill over this would be completely fake!

I actually thought that last post was funny.

In Napoli and even here in Salerno people sell fake bags on blankets near the train stations so I'm sure in Roma you'll see many of them as mentioned near heavily frequented areas. These days as mentioned the police are cracking down. I haven't heard anything yet around here about buyers getting in trouble for having purchased fake bags, however, two weeks ago the police in Napoli arrested a group of purse makers and confiscated thousands of yards of fake designer (Gucci, Prada, Fendi, and others) material, buckles, stamps to make impressions, zippers, registered cards, etc.
