Rhino Shark is a boss that you encounter in the underwater section of Varuna Point in Raft.
Summary[ | ]
The Rhino Shark is a large shark with a rhino like horn on the front of its head. It can not be damaged with weapons, instead needing to be lured into charging at pillars with explosives to damage it. Upon death it will drop 25 Raw Shark Meat and the Rhino Shark Trophy.
Strategies[ | ]
The Rhino Shark cannot be damaged by any weapons the player owns. In addition, unlike the normal sharks encountered elsewhere, the Rhino Shark will not attempt to bite the player. Instead, any time the player is within line of sight of the Rhino Shark, it may pause and face the player, then charge rapidly at the player, dealing significant damage if it makes contact with the player. Note that the charge has a moderate amount of movement prediction, with the Shark charging towards where the player is moving towards rather than the player's current position, making dodging the charge somewhat more difficult.
As the player cannot damage the Rhino Shark with conventional weapons, a different approach must be taken. The player must be targeted by the Rhino Shark's charge while swimming near a pillar, and get the boss to charge into the pillar, dealing damage to it. Once the pillar has broken and has a visible empty space near the center, the player can take an explosive barrel from the arena floor to the pillar and lodge it inside the gap in the pillar. The player must then get the Rhino Shark to charge into the same pillar again to detonate the barrel and destroy that pillar, opening a hole in the ceiling that allows the player to follow the Rhino Shark up to the next floor of the building. Between pillar hits, the Rhino Shark will break open the center of some of the walls, and swim outside of the arena to another wall. This can disorient the player, as they lose track of the Rhino Shark's position, exposing them to a charge, but it can also serve as a break to heal up and regenerate oxygen until the Rhino Shark returns to the room.
Note that the Rhino Shark will not start preparing a charge unless the player is in its line of sight, meaning it will not charge players fully concealed behind a pillar, and may interrupt its preparation to charge if the player hides behind the pillar too quickly after it starts preparing. In addition, because it has moderate movement prediction, abruptly swimming behind the pillar as it readies a charge may cause the Rhino Shark to miss the pillar entirely, charging past the other side of the pillar from where the player started. Instead, the player can float beside and slightly behind the pillar, and then once the Rhino Shark begins preparing a charge, move slightly sideways, only enough to be behind the edge of the pillar, not centered behind it. This will consistently cause the Rhino Shark to strike the pillar.
Only one pillar needs to be destroyed per floor, and the player must destroy pillars on 3 successive floors to defeat the Rhino Shark and progress further. The first floor has 4 pillars, with a pillar taking only a single hit from the Rhino Shark to break it open for the explosive barrel. The second floor has 2 pillars, requiring 2 hits on the same pillar to break it open for a barrel. The final floor has only a single somewhat narrower pillar in the center, which requires 3 hits before a barrel can be placed inside. Once a pillar has been destroyed on a floor, the Rhino Shark will leave that floor entirely, allowing the player time to collect themselves and heal up, if necessary, before moving to the next floor to continue the fight. There's no time limit on the fight, other than the limitations of oxygen, hunger, and thirst, all of which can be refilled during downtime in the fight.
There are a total of 24 Good Healing Salves located in air pockets along the walls in the 3 layers of the room. Each wall, on each floor, has 4 cubbies with an air pocket at the top, that being an upper and a lower cubby on either side of the middle wall section the Rhino Shark breaks open when moving around outside), for a total of 48 wall cubbies across the 3 levels of the boss arena. Half of these contain a Good Healing Salve in a vent on one of the two sides of the cubby, up in the air pocket. The Rhino Shark will not charge at the player or otherwise threaten them while they are in a cubby, providing time to heal and attend to other needs. Any healing salves not looted during the fight can also be retrieved after the Rhino Shark has been killed.
