The upcoming Joker sequel will feature Harley Quinn, but she might not be exactly what fans expect.
According to sources close to the production, Joker: Folie A Deux will deviate significantly from the comic book origin of Harley Quinn. In the comics, Harley Quinn is introduced as the Joker's psychiatrist, Dr. Harleen Quinzel. Over time, she becomes infatuated with the Joker and ultimately becomes his accomplice, taking on the mantle of Harley Quinn. However, if the rumors are true, Joker: Folie A Deux will present a different version of Harley's origin story, one that departs significantly from the comics.
Details of the new backstory are currently scarce, but a tweet by Editor-in-Chief of Geeks WorldWide, KC Walsh, who goes by @TheComixKid on Twitter, suggests that the film may depict Harley as an accomplice of the Joker, tweeting (in a now deleted tweet), “Harley Quinn will have a slight change to her character as she is a patient n peer of Joker not his doctor in Arkham Asylum.”

While details of the new version of Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie A Deux are still scarce, it's clear that the character will differ significantly from her comic book counterpart. If rumors are to be believed, the new film will present a take on Harley who is a fellow patient in the Asylum, rather than Joker’s Doctor like most of the original versions of the character. Without the influence of the Joker, this new version of Harley may be more independent and self-reliant than her comic book counterpart. She may also have a different set of goals and desires, as she will no longer be bound to the Joker's whims.
If Joker: Folie A Deux does indeed depart from the source material in significant ways, it will be interesting to see how audiences respond to the changes. Will they embrace the new Harley Quinn, or will they reject it as a betrayal of the character they know and love? Only time will tell.
For now, all fans can do is wait and see what Joker: Folie A Deux has in store for Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn. With the film still in production, it may be some time before there is a clearer picture of what the new origin story will look like.
