Rust-Oleum Universal Spray Paint is the perfect choice for any surface—from wood and metal to plastic and vinyl. It resists corrosion and rust and is available in a wide range of colors, sheens, and finishes—including hammered and metallic.

Dries tack free in 2-4 hours, to handle in 5-9 hours and fully dry in 24 hours. Primers may be top coated immediately. Apply a second coat or clear coat within 1 hour or after 48 hours. Wipe off tip before storing.

Primer allows the paint to adhere better by providing a uniform surface, and will help it last longer. It can also seal a porous surface, block out stains from bleeding through the topcoat, prevent rust formation on iron and steel, and prevent tannin bleed on wood.

For best results, apply 2 coats, allowing 1-2 minutes between coats.

Lightly sand the wood to remove rough spots or scuff up any existing varnish. This will help the spray paint adhere to the wood. Use a lint-free cloth to wipe away the sanding dust. Before using spray paint, it's a good idea to apply a coat of paint primer.

You'll face blistering and peeling paint if you don't remove loose rust first. A primer can help paint adhere to a rusted metal piece, but you still must first remove as much loose rust as possible from the surface first.

If painting over lightly rusted or bare metal, prime with a rust-preventative metal primer. A primed metal piece can be coated with either water or oil-based metal paint. Some paints, called DTM (Direct To Metal) are designed to encapsulate rust and prevent it from spreading.

Rusting results from a chemical reaction between metal, oxygen, and moisture, which we will explain further in the next section. Painting over rust does not halt this process. It can, instead, actually trap moisture and oxygen beneath the paint, hastening rust formation!

What happens if I recoat paint too soon? Applying the second coat of paint before letting it adequately dry will result in your paint peeling, clumping, and bubbling. It can also result in a different colour than what you intended.

After your first coat of paint is dry, it's safe to recoat typically after four to six hours. A good rule of thumb is to wait at least three hours to recoat your paint or primer if it's water-based. Waiting 24 hours is best for oil-based paint and primer.

Painting over it soon could cause your paint to adhere to the wall improperly, flaking and peeling.

Apply 2 or more light coats a few minutes apart. For best results, apply multiple light coats versus applying one heavy coat.
