S.M.A.R.T. Goals and Our BIG Financial Plan for Debt Payoff in 2017 (2024)

I’m a huge fan of creating S.M.A.R.T. goals for myself and my family. The years we write down goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timed are the years we make things happen.

And boy did we make things happen in 2016.

We set our sights on our biggest credit card debt. We decided to focus exclusively on that single debt. While others need the quick win of paying off a smaller debt, we wanted to take out the monster.

#YearofNo

So we dubbed 2016 our #yearofno and the rest is history. (Because it’s 2017 now!) Our #yearofno was all about hitting the reset button. We carefully considered every purchase and cut the fat everywhere we could. And sometimes, we got really creative about cutting fat that we typically consider to be a necessity. (Food is a necessity…chips are not. Etc.)

We ended 2016 without reaching our big, hairy, audacious goal of knocking out that massive debt. But we did cut it down by 78%! Like they say, reach for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars. (A little cheesy, and I think they need to brush up on their science a bit, but you get the point.)

Moving On

Naturally, this made me hungry for more success. (I’ve been accused of being a bit Type A.) So we’ve set our sights on an even bigger goal this year. When I mentioned it to hubby, he gave me a sideways look. Then he said, “Yeah. Let’s go for it.”

I’m excited about getting on with these goals! I’m sharing them here in the hopes that they inspire you. And, I’ll totally admit it, so I’m held accountable. It worked wonders last year!

SMART Goals and Debt Payoff for 2017

*I’m splitting off my blogging goals to a separate post this year. So if you like reading blog goals, stay tuned!

Home

Our 1950s home needs many updates. Our kitchen aggravates me a ton. But all of that will have to wait another year. I’ll avoid cute remodels on Pinterest to help keep my annoyance at bay. That said, there are other goals I have for our home this year that won’t cost money. And other things that can’t wait and will have to be addressed.

  • Remove all items from each bedroom and start fresh (This will be a biggie!)
  • Shelving in dining room corner (I’d like to make this a closet, but we already have the shelving on hand.)
  • Repair dining room ceiling
  • Clean out the basem*nt

S.M.A.R.T. Goals and Our BIG Financial Plan for Debt Payoff in 2017 (2)Family

  • Take a beach vacation. WHAT?? How does this fit in with no spending? It doesn’t. This is a case where family is going to trump debt. Dave Ramsey wouldn’t like it, but luckily he isn’t a king. 😉 I have plans for keeping costs down, and don’t worry. I’ll blog all about it!
  • Continue to practice swimming. Last year we invested in the YMCA for just the summer. We may do that again this year to continue the kids’ progress with swimming. It’s very important to me that they know how to swim (for safety).
  • Two hiking/fishing/camping trips for every warm month. Our family loves being outside. Chasing 4 different baseball teams all summer makes this difficult. That’s why I will make this more intentional.
  • One on one time for each child, every month. I need to see 5 check marks on this one each month. (That’s five kids for those keeping score at home.)

Marriage

  • 12 Dates in 2017. We get so busy during baseball season that we can almost never get a date in. So we’ll just have to make up for it in the other months.

Personal

  • Yoga & movement. Blogging isn’t exactly active business. I’d like to get more movement in. The yoga is as much for stress relief as anything.
  • Read On Writing.
  • Read through the New Testament. I’m not going to kid myself into thinking I’ll be able to get 12 books in this year with all of my other goals, but I definitely want to deepen my faith.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals and Our BIG Financial Plan for Debt Payoff in 2017 (3)Our Financial Goals: In Debt and Done with It

While 2016 meant big changes in our habits and thoughts on money, it didn’t eliminate our debt. We spent last year focused on our biggest credit card. I’m proud of the progress we made. BUT we are carrying some of that debt into the new year.

We are in debt and done with it. Our family wants to move forward, and we’ve decided that it’s time to get serious about knocking out all of our credit card debt.

The balance on all of our cards together is well over what we wanted to pay off last year. This goal makes last year’s goal pale in comparison.

Why do I think I can pay off even more debt when I failed at a smaller goal last year? For a few reasons:

  1. We’re starting off with good habits and don’t have to practice them anymore.
  2. I’ve learned a ton about blogging, and think I can improve my income this year. This is a big part of my plan.
  3. We’re sick and tired of debt. This should motivate us even more to plow through as quickly as possible.

What’s the Motto?

The question I’ve heard the most lately is “What’s your motto for 2017?” After seeing the success that #yearofno brought us last year, you can bet I’ve been pondering hard on this motto.

I knew I wanted something positive, motivational. I considered several different ideas. But one finally rose to the top.

Our motto for 2017 is #PressOn.

It meets all the criteria, and I think it will do just the trick for helping us get through what I hope will be a tough, but rewarding year.

  2. danaon January 6, 2017 at 11:45 am

I love this! Adding my link is another way to keep me SMART & committed to my goal!!

    • Jamie Jefferson January 6, 2017 at 11:52 am

Awesome! Glad to have you on board.

  3. Julieon January 6, 2017 at 12:27 pm

I like the press on motto, and the year of no is awesome to continue. I need to add that to my life a bit ha. I’d love for you to also come link this up to my linky 🙂

This is great. I’m starting a new book review feature and it will include me setting goals based on what I read in the book.

    • Jamie Jefferson January 7, 2017 at 2:20 pm

I love that idea! I read Better Than Before in late 2015 and it kicked me into high gear for 2016. So many interesting ideas on learning and behavior, and that translates well to financial goals.

  5. TrayceeBeeon January 7, 2017 at 11:33 am

I LOVE On Writing! It’s a very inspiring book that I’m sure you will enjoy!

    • Jamie Jefferson January 7, 2017 at 2:19 pm

I’ve been wanting to read it for a long time. I hope to improve my writing this year. 🙂

  6. Natalya @ Cottage Retreatiston January 7, 2017 at 3:09 pm

I love that your goals are SMART – my goals for 2017 are SMART too! 😉

And I will also be going on holiday this year, even though paying off some credit card debt. I think everyone on the debt free journey needs to cut themselves some slack otherwise it can all get a bit overwhelming! 78% in 2016 was fantastic so I hope you beat that 22% this year!

My motto for 2017 is to give less f***ks about little things I can’t change to focus on what makes me happy 😉

    Good luck for 2017!

    Natalya x

I am so type A over everything. I think I need to adopt your new mindset for myself, too! I agree, you can burn yourself out and cause more damage to your finances if you don’t cut loose sometimes. 🙂

  7. Erin @ Stay at Home Yogion January 8, 2017 at 10:39 am

Happy new year dear friend!!! 🙂 78% in 2016 – wow! Great job! I’m with you – a big believer in obnoxiously big goals. If we fail we still win big! I absolutely love your plan for a much deserved family vacation and can’t wait to read your tips on doing it frugally. #PressOn is amazing! Great motto! <3 <3 <3 Oh! And "On Writing" is one of my favorite books EVER! You will love it!!!

    • Jamie Jefferson January 8, 2017 at 9:05 pm

Always grateful for your encouragement. 🙂

That’s so awesome! We’re trying to get a big chunk paid off this year, but I don’t think we’ll be able to do all. But we’ve got a goal to pay off most of it, and then we’ll just have to finish in the first few months of 2018. It’ll feel so good to finally be free!

    • Jamie Jefferson January 9, 2017 at 8:26 am

I’ve been thinking the same thing. I’m cheering you on! 🙂

  9. Michelleon January 12, 2017 at 9:20 am

I love reading other people’s goals – I find them so motivating. My motto for this year is “FOCUS”. Too many distractions keeping me from reaching my goals.

Wishing you and your family a year of joyful abundance!

  10. Sandra Morrison January 12, 2017 at 9:35 am

That is our plan this year as well. A lot of it hinges on a house sale..but we are hopeful.
    Good luck with your goals.

I love the #yearofno idea. Once you’re already in that mindset, you will be able to pay off your debt. I’ve written, thought about, and talked about saving money a lot, and I’ve come to the conclusion that frugal isn’t a set of things you do, it’s just a lifestyle. Good luck in 2017!

Great idea for a link up for accountability. I haven’t set any concrete blogging goals yet, but I will join in if I decide to post about it.

Good luck on #presson But you don’t need luck since you have a plan and the commitment.

    Thanks for sharing on #FridayFrivolity.

It’s so great to hear how other people are making things work. Lots of great ideas and encouragement. I love the linkup too.
Thanks for sharing on the Homestead Blog Hop. I hope we see you again this Wednesday. Link back so we can feature you! 🙂

    • Jamie Jefferson January 16, 2017 at 11:30 pm

I did link back. Always love your blog hop!

  14. Astridon January 28, 2017 at 9:31 am

    Hi Jamie,

I really love this post! The accountability part makes all the difference! And you’ve inspired me even more than I already was with the plans we have for 2017!

I killed all my debt end of 2016, and it’s a wonderful feeling, so all the best for you and your family with nailing that this year!

I want to be more organized, because I’m hopeless at it. So far so good!

More marriage growing time for us too this year. Hubby’s goal is less time thinking about work, and taking more time off! Yay!

And, I’d like to recommend J Vernon McGee if you want to follow a structure for working through the New Testament. His structure runs over a 5 year period. Hubby and I follow it and we’re in year 2 (it was one of our must do-s from last year). It’s a great program to follow and he’s pretty in depth that’s why it runs over a 5 year period.

    Thanks again,
    Astrid

    • Jamie Jefferson January 28, 2017 at 11:00 am

Thanks so much for the advice! I will certainly look into it. Congrats on being debt free! I can’t wait to feel that elephant leave our shoulders. 🙂

      • Astridon February 1, 2017 at 7:04 am

It’s an awesome feeling and I just know you’re going to nail it in 2017!

I’m sure I’ll be around here again since I really enjoy your site, so I can stay in the loop and cheer on from the sideline!
