SAP BrandVoice: Tattoo Removal Business Draws Up High-Growth Potential (2024)

According to Allied Market Research, the global tattoo removal market size was valued at $478 million in 2019, and is projected to reach $795 million by 2027. Leading the pack is Removery, a tattoo removal company with more than 140 locations and plans for continued expansion. Last year, Removery CEO Tom Weber inked his skin with Removery R logo tattoos. Now, he is removing these tattoos for the sole purpose of demonstrating the possibilities of tattoo removal.

In this exclusive Q&A, I had a chance to catch up with Weber to learn how he was able to implement the company’s vision—created together with Removery's founding partners—that has led to exponential growth.

What was the “ah-ha” moment that got the ball rolling with a tattoo removal business?

Tom Weber: While an increasing number of people are getting tattoos, options for safe, effective, and professional tattoo removal were limited and fragmented prior to Removery. Our founding team saw a tremendous opportunity to build a global brand in a highly untapped market and to change lives by helping people remove tattoos that no longer represented who they were.

This idea was actioned in 2019 when the business was formed through the combination of four of the leading and most trusted tattoo removal brands in North America. Our founding team saw an opportunity to design, develop and elevate a field that needed corporate infrastructure, research, and advancement for the safety and care of all. In 2019, these tattoo removal industry leaders were brought together under one name: Removery.

What were some of the key challenges getting the first removal sites up and running? How did you overcome them?

Prior to our rapid footprint expansion, we focused on laying a solid groundwork to support sustainable growth. This encompassed everything from establishing our essential systems and technology to implementing robust recruiting and training programs and clinical and operational support models.

We’re working on broader plans to educate the market and increase awareness for our brand – there is significant demand out there and a ton of white space.

Next, we set our sights on devising a growth plan to identify suitable markets, locate, and design our new studios. While these initial steps required considerable time and investment, we recognized the importance of constructing this infrastructure before our rapid growth.

Today, we're proud of our world-class support network that fosters our continued growth and guarantees the delivery of safe and effective tattoo removal services to our clients at scale.

How is Removery different than other tattoo removal businesses? How do you attract and retain clients?

We marry best-in-class technology with a steadfast commitment to extensive professional training and an empathetic, client-first approach. We've built a trusted brand based on our unwavering dedication to quality service and the client experience, establishing ourselves as the only multi-country tattoo removal provider of scale.

This unique blend of innovative technology, professional excellence, empathetic service, and authoritative guidance from our Clinical Advisory Board enables us to attract and retain our valued clients.

What are some of the most common things heard from clients who have decided to have tattoos removed? It must be a cathartic process for some.

Many of our clients talk about the sense of liberation and renewal they experience through the tattoo removal process. It's often a deeply personal journey linked to their evolving identities and life transitions. For some, it's about letting go of the past, while for others, it's about making space for new beginnings. Our role is to support them through this transformation.

What are Removery’s future growth plans and projections? Is the company ready for global expansion?

We're very excited about our future growth plans. We have built a strong foundation to support our growth, including investing in our infrastructure, technology, and personnel. Removery currently operates in over 150 locations across the US, Canada, and Australia and has a pathway to more than double our footprint in these markets in the coming years. We also see opportunities for more global expansion beyond this. We’re working on broader plans to educate the market and increase awareness for our brand – there is significant demand out there and a ton of white space. Our goal is to make our world-class tattoo removal services accessible to as many people as possible, and growing our presence is a key part of this mission.
