The scientific method has limitations. It can only answer objective questions based on quantitative facts from observable, measurable, and repeatable experiments. It cannot answer subjective questions based on qualitative beliefs or opinions such as the presence of deities and ghosts or who makes the best doughnut.

Clearly, the scientific method is a powerful tool, but it does have its limitations. These limitations are based on the fact that a hypothesis must be testable and falsifiable and that experiments and observations be repeatable. This places certain topics beyond the reach of the scientific method.

The scientific method can only answer questions that can be proven or disproven through testing. Make an observation or ask a question.

Details—Models cannot include all the details of the objects that they represent. For example, maps cannot include all the details of the features of the earth such as mountains, valleys, etc. Approximations—Most models include some approximations as a convenient way to describe something that happens in nature.

Because social phenomena cannot be controlled or used for laboratory experiments, generalizations made by observation method are not very reliable. The relative-ness of the social phenomena and the personal bias of the observer again create difficulty for making valid generalization in observation.

Some questions that cannot be answered through scientific reasoning or logical thinking include: Questions of morality, ethics, and values. Questions about the meaning and purpose of life. Questions about the existence of God, spirituality, and religious beliefs.

What happens to us after we die? How did so much life appear on our planet when others seem devoid of any species at all? Who, if anyone, pulls the strings of our universe? Is it some all-powerful god in control or are there physical and mathematical principles driving the engine of our existence?
