Scott Rosson is the secret love child of Lily van der Woodsen and Rufus Humphrey whom Lily gave away when she was very young. Lily kept the secret from Rufus for many years until CeCe tells him in season two. He is also the half brother of Serena and Eric van der Woodsen and Dan and Jenny Humphrey.

Lily and Rufus go to Boston to try and track their son down, although Scott's adoptive parents are afraid of losing him and tell Lily and Rufus he is dead.

Scott is aware of his birth records and contacts his half-brother Dan through his piece in the New York Times. In addition, he pretends to be a student at NYU and dates Vanessa for a while to get closer to Dan and find out more about his birth family. Despite his efforts to tell Rufus his true parentage, he decides not to admit his secret. However, his secret is revealed to the world by Georgina Sparks during Rufus and Lily's wedding. Although he later chooses to go back to Boston to be with his adoptive parents, he parts with Lily and Rufus on a good note after attending their impromptu wedding.
