What is an SSDL?

Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratories (SSDLs) provide calibrations for dosimetry equipment. Dosimetry equipment is used to measure the amount of ionising radiation delivered when a technique that relies on ionising radiation for diagnosis and treatment of patients is used. Also, in measurements related to radiation protection of staff and/or the public. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the measurements performed are traceable to the International system of Units (SI).

What is the SSDL Network?

In 1976, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), together with the World Health Organization (WHO), established a Network of Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratories (SSDLs), known as the IAEA/WHO SSDL Network. The IAEA/WHO Network of SSDLs was set up to improve the accuracy in radiation dosimetry. This Network, through SSDLs designated by the IAEA Member States, provides a traceability route for national dosimetry standards to the SI. The IAEA maintains a database of all members in the SSDL Network (DOLNET), which can be used to find appropriate calibration services.
