Set Up a 2-Factor Authentication App at Login | Mailchimp (2024)

Set up 2-factor authentication to enhance your account's security. With 2-factor authentication enabled in Mailchimp, you need your login credentials and a one-time passcode to log in to your account. This passcode is sent via SMS or generated by an authenticator app.

In this article, you'll learn how to use 2-factor authentication with an authenticator app.

Before you start

Here are some things to know before you begin this process.

  • If you prefer to receive a passcode via text, check out Set Up 2-Factor Authentication with SMS.
  • You'll need to use a 2-factor authenticator app on your mobile device. Examples of these apps include Google Authenticator and iOS authenticator.
  • This authentication process requires a mobile device. The passcode can’t be generated on a computer.
  • When an Owner or Admin enables 2-factor authentication for their login, all additional users with access to the account will also be required to set up 2-factor authentication the next time they log in. To learn more about user levels, check out Manage User Levels in Your Account.
  • Check out our troubleshooting guide if you're having trouble logging in using an authenticator app.

Set up an authenticator app

In most cases, you’ll set up 2-factor authentication when you create a Mailchimp account. You’ll automatically be directed to the Account security page where you can choose your 2-factor authentication method.

To set up 2-factor authentication with an authenticator app, follow these steps.

  1. Open your Account security page.
  2. In the 2-factor authentication section, select the Authenticator app radio button and click Next.
  3. Complete the steps in the Set up authenticator app section to add your Mailchimp account to your authenticator app.
  4. Enter your Authenticator code and click Enable.
  5. Save the backup code displayed on the confirmation page offline or on a separate device. You'll need the backup code to log in to Mailchimp if you ever lose, restore, or damage your device.
  6. Click Close.

Now, each time you log in, you’ll be prompted to enter your Mailchimp password and verification code from your authenticator app.

To set up another device, repeat the steps above to connect your account to your authenticator app on that device.

Log in with an authenticator app

To use a connected authentication app to log in to your account, follow these steps.

  1. Enter your Mailchimp username and password on the Mailchimp login screen, and click Log In.
  2. Launch your authenticator app on your connected mobile device to generate your random, temporary passcode.
  3. Type the 6-digit passcode into the Verification code field in Mailchimp. Click Log In.

Note

Don't share your login credentials or multi-factor authentication code with anyone; our employees will never ask for the code.

Enable remember me options

By default, Mailchimp requires you to log in and complete 2-factor authentication every time you return to your account after leaving it.

Enable specific Mailchimp cookies and select the remember me options when you log in to reduce the number of times you need to complete these processes. To keep your account secure, we recommend only doing this on your personal, trusted devices.

To enable remember me options, follow these steps.

  1. Click your profile icon and choose Cookie Preferences.
  2. Use the toggle to enable Performance and Functionality Cookies.
  3. Click Confirm My Choices.
  4. Next time you log in, check the boxes next to Keep me logged in and Skip this for two weeks.

If you clear your browser cookies, you’ll need to repeat these steps to enable this functionality again. You’ll always be asked to log in and complete 2-factor authentication if you access Mailchimp on a different or unknown device.

Reconfigure 2-factor authentication

Once you’ve set up 2-factor authentication, you won’t be able to remove or disable it. If you need to reconfigure your authenticator app or switch your authentication method, you can reconfigure your 2-factor authentication settings.

From your Account security page, click Reconfigure and follow the prompts to set up a new authenticator app. Or, click Switch to SMS to switch your authentication method, and follow the prompts to Set Up 2-Factor Authentication with SMS.
