Shein is a Chinese online fast fashion retailer headquartered in Singapore. Founded in Nanjing, China in October 2008 as ZZKKO by entrepreneur Chris Xu, Shein grew to become the world's largest fashion retailer as of 2022.
Shein´s reputation has been on the spot for several reasons: allegations of use of forced labor, unsustainable business model, ESG non compliance, unfair usage of countries taxation laws, and others.
While one should be very careful to analyze the company and investigate the allegations above, we need also pay attention to the points below that shape the current reality of the company in face of its competitors.
In conclusion, Shein's business model revolves around its ability to rapidly bring the latest fashion trends to market, leveraging a data-driven approach, a seamless e-commerce platform, efficient supply chain management, and a focus on international expansion. By targeting a specific demographic and providing affordable fashion options, Shein has successfully gained a significant market share and positioned itself as a leading player in the fast-fashion industry.
