How about a simple Old Fashioned co*cktail recipe to kick off the weekend? Sounds pretty good to me too. Experimenting with co*cktails is a lot of fun, but out of respect for a classic like an Old Fashioned, I’m sticking to tradition.

A few weekends ago I received the best compliment when I was referred to as a mixologist. I got to thinking, did I miss my calling? Oh well, I can still be a mixologist in my home can’t I? All it takes is the right recipe to impress my guests.

An Old Fashioned co*cktail is a rich complex blend of flavors, with a hint of sweetness, a trace of citrus and satisfying smooth finish.

Old Fashioned co*cktail Recipe

  • 2 ounces Rye Whiskey or Bourbon
  • 1/2 ounce Simple Syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 2 dashes Orange Bitters
  • Cherries
  • Orange peel
  1. Add one or two cherries to an old Old Fashioned glass and lightly mash with a muddler.
  2. Take orange peel and rub around the inside of the glass rim, then add peel to the cherries.
  3. Add ice cubes, rye whiskey, simple sugar, and bitters.
  4. Stir to combine and serve.

Recipe Tips

Muddling the cherries is completely optional. I suggest only mashing the cherries once or twice with a muddler, otherwise your drink will look like a smoothy that’s gone bad.

Our family can be a little obsessive over Luxardo cherries. They are the only ones I buy now and I highly recommend giving them a try if you haven’t already.

Rubbing the orange peel around the inside rim of the glass to release the citrus oil, is an unexpected trick that your guests will appreciate.

I prefer making an Old Fashioned with rye whiskey, others prefer bourbon which is totally your call. Does that mean I’m going to turn down a Old Fashioned with bourbon? Heck no!

The most traditional recipe calls for a sugar cube, however to simplify making this co*cktail at home I use simple syrup.

co*ckTAIL TIPS

My motto should be, “buy quality liquor”. The best co*cktails are for savoring, so as tempting as it might be to buy cheap liquor, your co*cktails will be left wanting and your guests disappointed.

For drink consistency I use a jigger to measure ingredients and do my best to serve co*cktails in the appropriate glass. I also use a silicone ice tray to make large square ice cubes.

An Old Fashioned co*cktail calls for an Old Fashioned glass, and yes, that’s how this style of glass got its name.
