2022 HAS BEEN a year of optimism.

Some Australian states may have welcomed in the new year with a fresh wave of COVID (and accompanying restrictions), but the following months have seen us return to international travel (chances are you know a person — if not ten — who have jetted off for a European summer), haul ourselves back to the office and embrace in-person celebrations, dining and night life once again.

In short, life feels brighter — and our clothing has reflected that. If the dopamine dressing that characterised 2021 was a sartorial gut punch, the hues taking hold in 2022 are here to knock you over (in a good way).

Below, BAZAAR rounds up the colour trends that are coming to define fashion in 2022.

Valentino PP Pink

Blame it on Barbiecore. Valentino PP pink — a colour formulated in collaboration with creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli and Pantone Colour — debuted during the Maison’s autumn/winter ’22 ready-to-wear collection at Paris Fashion Week has reigned supreme this year. From celebrities donning bright garments from the original Valentino collection, to dying their hair adjacent shades and dressing in similarly awe-inspiring pink hues, the colour has been unmissable.

Silver

Futurism has been fashion’s buzzword as of late, which is fitting given icy-cool metallics are taking over on both the runway and social media feeds. Street punters have embraced silver accents and all-out shimmering looks at recent fashion weeks, and the rise of the mermaid-core aesthetic and growing popularity of quirky service station sunglasses has done little but spur on the metallic movement.

Kelly green

Given that we can finally embrace the great outdoors once again, it is little surprise that shades of green have been prevalent across the fashion sphere as of late. And, if you’re going to run with the colour, why not go all-out with a full Kelly green ensemble? The almost-fluorescent shade has been a catwalk and street style favourite; a punchy step up from the shades of sage that have dominated the former few seasons.

Red hot

Red is the trans-seasonal shade for the statement maker. Whether it be in scarlet, cherry or sunburnt shades, fashion has been seeing red as of late. With its adaptability — darker tones for autumn and winter, or bright blood-reds for the warmer months — it is the perfect go-to, all year round.

Cobalt blue

Initially taking hold following Off-White’s autumn/winter 21/22 show, cobalt blue continues to endure. The colour has been a feature across international runways and made its presence known in the collections of Antipodean designers — namely Dion Lee and Jordan Dalah — and given its joyous associations, we are not complaining.

6

Buttery yellow

Yellow has long been regarded as a happy colour, and what better way to lift your mood than donning a pastel, butter yellow look? The sunny shade has been popular across both fashion and home design, on an upward trajectory that is only to be helped by the arrival of warmer weather on Australian shores in the coming months.
