Is it okay to skip Venice? ›

Italy has more major tourist cities than most countries. Of course, the capital is a must, but cities like Florence and Venice are big draws and, honestly, must-sees.

If this is your first visit to Venice, I'd recommend at least 3 nights and 2 full days here, so you can pack in the main highlights. Obviously the more days you have, the better. However, if you've been to Venice before, have a think about why you're returning.

How Many Days Do You Need in Venice? Ideally, plan on spending two or more days in Venice. With 2 days in Venice, you have just enough time to visit the highlights of Venice and stroll the canals. It will be a busy but wonderful 2 days in Venice.

A Busy Short Layover In Venice

Obviously spending only a few hours in a city like Venice is not enough time to take in the sights, history, and culture. I recommend giving yourself more time to explore everything this old Italian city has to offer, but if you find yourself in a similar situation don't pass it up.

You can walk across it, from head to tail, in about an hour. Nearly all of your sightseeing is within a 20-minute walk of the Rialto Bridge or St.

How to avoid lines in Venice? ›

Plan A: Arrive Before 10am or after 3pm, when the waiting time is often a bit shorter. Plan B: Buy a Museum Pass from the much less crowded Correr Museum across the square. The pass gives access to some of the top sites and churches in Venice including the Doge's Palace. The toilets at the Correr are better too.

Basilica di San Marco or St Mark's Basilica is one of the most beautifully designed churches in Italy and Venice's top attractions. The marvellous décor with gold mosaics and works by Renaissance painters. Moreover, Byzantine domes are incredibly charming and make it one of the must-visit Venice tourist places.

The official tariff of a 30-minute ride on a gondola is € 80 ( US$ 86.80). The price goes up to € 100 ( US$ 108.50) from 7 pm onwards. If you want the gondolier to sing or to play an instrument during the ride, you will have to pay extra. Note that most gondoliers will charge you more than the official tariff.

San Marco — Best for first-time visitors. You'll have easy access to most major attractions and be right in the city center. Giudecca — A quieter district with a relaxed nightlife scene. Great if you want to access the main attractions by vaporetto / water bus but also enjoy a slower pace.

In case you're still wondering – YES, Venice is absolutely worth visiting! From its winding canals, romantic architecture, and endless bridges, the city is often compared to a living painting.

Florence is the better choice because it offers a much more authentic experience and has a longer shoulder season, which means fewer crowds. However, if you want to explore historic wonders and go island hopping, then Venice is the choice for you.
