Why do some taps turn the wrong way? ›

This design is based on convention, and it is used to help people quickly and easily distinguish between hot and cold taps. By turning the handle in the correct direction, users can more easily control the flow and temperature of the water and avoid accidentally turning on the wrong tap.

The position of the stem units in the valve influence the rotation of the handles. On a Delta two-handle lavatory faucet, if the handles rotate in the wrong direction, simply rotate the right stem stop assembly 180 degrees. This will change the rotation of the faucet handle to the other direction.

There are two main types of taps. In the older style, the hot and cold are turned anti-clockwise to turn on and clockwise to turn off. With newer 1/4 and 1/2-turn ceramic disc taps, the hot is turned anti-clockwise to turn on, and the cold is turned clockwise to turn on.

Turning the handle of a tap clockwise typically results in the closing or tightening of the valve inside, leading to the cessation of water flow. Therefore, in most cases, turning the handle clockwise will shut off the water.

The hot side should turn counter-clockwise to turn on the flow, and clockwise to turn off the flow. The cold lever is opposite, clockwise to turn on the flow, and counter-clockwise turn turn it off.

The most common reason is that spinning faucet handles can be caused by general wear and tear on the faucet stem, otherwise known as the faucet cartridge. This part can be replaced by removing the faucet from the sink and inserting the new cartridge.

A Cold Valve opens Anti-clockwise (ACO) and a Hot Valve opens Clockwise (CO). A two lever tap usually has two valves known as 'Hot' (CO) and 'Cold'(ACO).

Uneven water flow, low pressure when the pressure at other faucets seems all right, or troublesome switching back and forth from spray head to sink spout can be caused by a malfunctioning diverter valve or by a restricted hose.
