J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow is based on the true story of a rugby team whose plane crashed in the mountains. In 1972, a rugby team boarded Uruguayan Air Force flight 571 to Chile. Unfortunately, the plane never reached its destination and crashed in the Andes mountains. Of the 45 passengers, 12 died on impact, and only 29 lived to the second day. The plane could not have crashed in a worse place – the snowy land is inaccessible, and the temperatures are well below zero.

Despite several search-and-rescue attempts, the search is eventually called off, and the survivors are presumed dead. Society of the Snowis the harrowing tale of how a select group of passengers on the brink of death fought off harsh conditions to survive over two and a half months.
