There are lots of advantages to being five-foot-nine — seeing above the crowd at concerts and always being able to reach the top shelf of the pantry, for example — but finding jeans that fit me is not one of them. In my experience, most skinny jeans come with a 27- or 28-inch inseam; I have a 32-inch inseam, so I’m always looking at a solid four-inch crop unless I buy the tall versions, which can be more expensive, limited in stock — especially when I’m trying to hit the sale section — or not generous enough in length. And unlike petite women, who can have pants hemmed if they’re too long, I’m out of luck (it’s not like I can add extra fabric). Because I completely understand the struggle, I spoke to 13 tall women (between the heights of five-foot-eight and six-foot-six) to find their favorite skinny jeans, straight legs, and even flares that actually fit.

Best overall | Best (less expensive) overall | Best wide leg | Best straight leg | Best baggy | Best jeggings | Best flare | Best cropped | Best curve | Best plus size | Best for extra-tall women

What we’re looking for:

Inseam: Yes, you can call this criteria a no-brainer. But to get into specifics, I looked for jeans that come with inseams longer than 30 inches and up to 38 inches (which is probably the longest you’d be able to find) to suit more kinds of tall women. Sure, women over six feet might scoff at a 30-inch inseam, but because some tall women might have a long torso rather than long legs and vice versa, I wanted to give as many options as possible — especially since most tall women are probably still looking for a 30-to-34-inch inseam instead of the extra-tall lengths.

Style: Even though there are lots of different styles out there — skinny, baggy, straight leg, wide leg, flare, cropped, and curvy — you probably have a good idea already of what kind of jeans you want. The story is broken down by category, but if you’d like to skip directly to a specific style, I suggest using the table of contents above to take you right where you want to go. And just to note: I don’t subscribe to the teenager philosophy that skinny jeans are “over,” because they go with nearly everything and fit most body types. Very few pant styles can claimthe same versatility.

Wash: Because wash plays a huge role in the style and look of jeans, too, each shade is noted below. I focused on classic blue jeans rather than colored, white, or black denim. There’s no one wash better than another; it all comes down to personal preference.

Best overall jeans for tall women

30- and 32-inch inseams | Skinny | Medium wash

Madewell makes two tall options, aptly named “Tall,” for those five-foot-eight to five-foot-11, and “Taller,” for those over six feet. For a mainstream brand, Madewell accommodates more inseams than I can usually find; the downside, though, is the Taller jeans, which feature an inseam of 32 inches or longer, sell out very quickly (there are barely any sizes left on the site currently). In an effort not to get your hopes up, I chose a classic skinny jean with a Tall inseam of 30 inches, which gives enough length for most people to cover their ankles. Former Strategist social-media editor Hannah Starke, who is five-foot-ten, says these are “the only jeans that fit my body correctly,” as they’re designed with more room in the hips and a longer rise to accommodate an hourglass shape; Starke says they’re the only jeans she can buy true to size. (They do come in a non-curvy option in case you don’t need the extra hip room, but you lose the different inseam choices.) I prefer looser-fitting jeans, so I’ve leaned more toward Madewell’s straight, vintage, or mom jeans, which actually tend to have an even longer inseam and might be more appealing to taller folks.

Best (less expensive) overall jeans for tall women

36- and 38-inch inseams | Skinny | Medium wash

More tall women recommended ASOS Design than any other brand, especially because of the price and surprisingly ample inseam options; however, ASOS’s stock is unpredictable — clothes sell out extremely quickly, and its style offerings change almost weekly, which is why I suggested Madewell as the true best overall. But if you’re willing to constantly check for stock and new styles, the price is definitely worth it. Alicia Jay, founder of the tall-focused fashion blog Tall Swag, describes ASOS Design’s jeans as something of a sleeper hit. Because she’s six-foot-six, she looks to brands that offer as many options as possible, with as long of inseams as possible, and the jeans at ASOS go up to 38 inches. She also thinks they’re good quality for the price. Opal Hoyt, who is six feet tall and the lead singer of Zenizen, also likes the longer fit of ASOS, calling them “an affordable standard skinny jean.” ASOS also offers boyfriend, straight leg, distressed, black wash, and more styles. And if you don’t need quite that much length, the brand has pairs with just a 32-inch inseam, too.

Best wide-leg jeans for tall women

32- and 35-inch inseams | Wide leg | Light wash

Just as I didn’t want to give in to the infamous Re/Done white tank top, I hoped the company’s jeans weren’t actually as good as people say, partially because they’re so expensive and have become somewhat ubiquitous. But they’re truly some of the best jeans I’ve ever owned. Rigid denim — meaning there will be zero stretch — flexes over time, starting off tight, then molding to your body. They are pricier than many other pieces on this list; however, the pair feels extremely high quality, and I know I will have these jeans longer than most denim, especially those on the fast-fashion side. Not all of Re/Done’s jeans offer different inseam lengths, but this pair does. It goes up to a size 32 and even comes in multiple washes. For a similar fit but much lower price tag, Emily Atkinson, a Nashville-based elementary-school teacher who is five-foot-nine, recommends checking out the Gap, which actually has an ample amount of tall options, like this Re/Done dupe, or Abercrombie & Fitch.

Best straight-leg jeans for tall women

30- and 32-inch inseam | Straight leg | Medium wash

Levi’s is a safe bet for quality, affordable jeans. Not all of its styles offer long enough inseams for tall women, but the classic 501s do. Artist Lucy Litman, who is five-foot-eight, appreciates that Levi’s jeans have just the right amount of stretch and the option to choose different lengths. The regular inseam spans 30 inches, but you can choose the taller option for 32 inches of length. I personally like this medium wash, but it also comes in a dark wash.

Best baggy jeans for tall women

33.5-inch inseam | Baggy | Light wash

I first heard about these jeans after interviewing model Winnie Harlow, who also happens to be five-foot-nine, after she mentioned that they had “that perfect vintage-Levi’s-quality feel.” The baggy style directly responds to the sudden hatred for skinny jeans, and Harlow herself even thinks they’re more comfortable than many of the jeans she has tried recently. “Good American is known for their fit and have been size inclusive since day one,” says Katie Sturino, founder of Megababe and body-positivity advocate. The jeans go up to size 24 and come in a 33.5-inch inseam. As a bonus, the jeans are made from recycled materials and created with less water usage in solar-powered factories.

Best jeggings for tall women

30.5-inch inseam | Skinny | Dark wash

Yes, these are jeggings, but don’t disregard them. Public-relations executive Sarah Agate, who is six feet tall, admits this option is “kind of different,” and originally she “felt weird getting Spanx pants,” but she’s now obsessed. She calls the tall option “the perfect length for your legs and [it’s] also properly high-waisted.” As she explains, “One of my biggest issues in finding pants is that they never seem to be long enough or tight enough at my waist. If I opt for longer pants, I usually have to go up a size and then they’re too big and I’m constantly pulling them up all day.” For her, Spanx solves this problem because the pants provide a snug fit in all areas without having to compromise on length. She and her sister, who is six-foot-one, now both own them. “My legs have never looked better, and I get compliments all the time,” she says. They also come in white, distressed, black, and light-wash denim as well as a funky flare in the same washes.

Best flare jean for tall women

34-inch inseam | Flare | Light wash

Sturino urges tall women to embrace their height and wear bell-bottoms because “a flare celebrates long legs and even elongates them further.” She loves these high-rise flares from Veronica Beard because they’re “not your average pair of jeans.” They feature external pockets on the front as well as on the back, and Sturino describes them as being almost “more like a trouser,” so they’re “ideal for work to play.” Plus, they boast a whopping 35-inch inseam. “I forgot how much I love the fit and that they are long,” Sturino says. As a less expensive option, Warp + Weft, a sustainable denim brand that keeps all prices under $100, makes an excellent flare, too, with an inseam of 33 inches.

Best cropped jeans for tall women

27-inch inseam | Straight leg | Medium wash

It may sound ridiculous to include cropped jeans on a post about tall jeans, but hear me out: If you do want cropped jeans, not all pairs work for tall people — most look pretty strange because the proportions are completely off. So if you’re going for a more abbreviatedlook, yoga instructor Lauren Witonsky, who is five-foot-eight, recommends Current/Elliott because the straight leg doesn’t tightly grip the ankle, like skinny jeans, or flare out too much, like an exaggerated wide leg; the loose fit makes the crop look intentional, not like your jeans are accidentally too short. For Witonsky, the 27-inch inseam hits just above her ankles. Taylore Glynn, a beauty editor at Allure who is five-foot-nine, suggests Urban Outfitters’ in-house brand BDG for something a little less expensive. “Cropped pants usually end up looking like culottes on my longer calves, but these stretchy jeans hit me in just the right places,” she says.

Best curve jeans for tall women

33.5-inch inseam | Straight leg | Light wash

Abercrombie & Fitch, the comeback queen of the past few years, revamped its brand to offer more size-inclusive, trend-focused pieces without its signature moose emblazoned on everything. Its jeans have taken the focus recently thanks to how high quality they feel for such an affordable price. All of its denim styles come in a “curve” option, which fits those with wider hips and more of an hourglass shape better; it even offers plus sizes as well as tall lengths. This ’90s-inspired distressed pair has a 33.5-inch inseam for its “long” inseam and 35.5-inch inseam for an “extra-long” pair, though the extra-long styles are currently in limited stock.

Best plus-size jeans for tall women

32- and 34- inch inseam | Skinny | Light wash

Two of the more difficult-to-shop-for categories rolled into one: plus size and tall. Sturino suggests looking to Torrid if you’re stumped on where to find a stellar option that melds both styles together. The brand offers tall (32 inches) and extra-tall inseams (34 inches) to give you options. And unlike many other skinny jeans, which can become baggy toward the ankles, “these maintain their shape all the way down, which can be hard to find,” Sturino adds. This pair also features a button fly, a rarer featurein plus-size clothing.

Best jeans for extra-tall women

34-, 36-, and 38- inch inseams | Skinny | Dark wash

A good handful of brands create jeans specifically for women over six feet who need as much length as they can get. Truthfully, they all offer similar-looking jeans with equally long inseams and for a relatively close price, which means you probably can’t go wrong. I chose the Amalli Talli jeans as the best of the bunch, though, because the company offers a wide range of sizes and two different inseam options. Akia Danielle, a six-foot-tall style blogger, appreciates that the founders of the brands are actually tall women, so “they get what we need,” as she puts it. Other expert favorites are Height-of-Fashion, Alloy Apparel, and Nineth Closet in case you’d like to shop around.
