Designing your child’s bedroom is such a fun activity we all get to do as parents. You may be expecting a brand new baby. Or maybe you’re redecorating your toddler’s room. Either way, there’s a lot to think about when putting together your child’s nursery.

One thing you may want to consider when designing your child’s nursery, is the colors you select to create the best environment for a good night’s sleep. Believe it or not, the colors of our environment to play a role in how our body prepares for sleep.

Think about it. Have you ever seen a neon bedroom? I would have loved that in my teenage years, but that’s not ideal for sleep.

Color effects our mood and emotions. Both of these influence your child’s frame of mind when it comes time for sleep. Have you ever been upset or anxious when you lay down in bed? Those feelings make it tough to relax and journey into sleep.

Our bodies take into consideration the environment around us. The external environment can send signals to the brain to begin to settle down or gear up for a fun experience.

When selecting a color pallet, you’ll want to consider non-stimulating colors. This could be the colors of the walls you paint, bedding, or décor. Non-stimulating colors will really help your child relax when they enter their bedroom.

The best colors for to decorate your child’s bedroom as blue, green, pink, yellow or orange because these colors are mellow and non-stimulating, which cues the brain to start to relax and prepare for sleep.

    Blue

    The color blue is associated with serenity and has a wonderful calming and relaxing effect. It evokes visions of the sky and the ocean. Peace in nature. Soft and light blue colors are non-stimulating, which can help your body produce melatonin.

    Melatonin is the hormone in our bodies that makes us naturally sleepy with the rise and fall of the sun. And is exactly what our body needs in the evening to get tired when bedtime arrives.

    Blue is a neutral color as well. I doesn’t have to only be used for boys. I have an ocean theme for my daughter’s nursey and painted her walls blue and white and added pink accents.

    If you’re not looking to change the color of the walls in your child’s bedroom, you can add some blue accents with their sheets. Or you can even add pops of blue with some cute bedroom decor to create that feeling of serenity.

    Green is a non-stimulating color that promotes a feeling of calmness and peace. It is the ideal color for sleep because it essentially symbolizes nature. Think trees, the rainforest, swaying grass by the beach.

    The mind associates nature with tranquility and calmness. In fact, you can even add plants in the bedroom to bring nature to you and add accents of green without needing to repaint.Think about adding some real or fake plants to your little one’s nursery.

    When selecting which shade of green to choose from, I recommend steering away from bright greens and instead sticking with a softer shade like sage.

    The color pink, with its soft and soothing hue, has a unique ability to create a calming and conducive environment for sleep. This gentle and warm color is often associated with feelings of comfort and tranquility, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms and sleep spaces.

    Pink’s inherent calming properties are known to promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety, which are often barriers to a good night’s sleep.

    As much as I’m a fan of bright colors, we do want to avoid bright pinks or shades with red undertones.Those can be too stimulating.

    Pink is such an easy color to add to a bedroom. You can add it to the bedding or to the wall decor, like this.

    Yellow is a great neutral color for a bedroom. This is my favorite choice for wall color families who don’t want to find out the gender of their baby before birth.

    It brings about feelings of happiness, peacefulness and tranquility. When most people think about yellow, you think of the sun that wonderful feeling of warmth.

    I love a happy yellow décor like this one to add to any child’s room.

    Orange

    Light orange colors such as a beige or can be a great option for a bedroom color. It’s neutral and can bring about feelings of serenity.

    When I think of beige, it reminds me of digging my feet into the warm sand at the beach.

    When you’re selecting the right shades of orange for your child’s room, avoid brighter colors of orange. Instead, stick with those oranges that have more brown undertones.
