The first ratings were a little different than today. “G” was for general audiences, “M” for mature audiences. “R,” in 1968 meant no one under 16 would be admitted without an adult guardian.

NC-17. The NC-17 rating is the highest rating (even higher than the R-rating) that a film can be given, and it means the movie is for adults only (ages 18 and older) and no one age 17 or younger will be admitted. This rating, prior to 1990, was previously rated X.

Films with the U certification are fit for unrestricted public exhibition and are family-friendly. These films can contain universal themes like education, family, drama, romance, sci-fi, action etc. These films can also contain some mild violence, but it cannot be prolonged.

L: Strong language. N: Nudity. P: Prejudice with regards to ethnicity, race, gender etc. S: Sexual conduct. V: Violence.

A fully restricted rating prevents anyone underage from viewing the content regardless of accompaniment. In the MPA rating system, NC-17 is a fully restricted rating, and nobody under 18 may see a picture with this rating, even if accompanied by an adult.

The MPA gave the movie an NC-17 rating "for some sexual content." NC-17 is a higher classification than an R rating and means no one under 17 years old can be admitted to see the movie, whereas for rated-R films, those under 17 can see the movie with a parent or guardian. On the film review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, films that every surveyed critic considered bad have a 0% rating. As of 2023, only 40 films with 20 reviews have received this rating.

In the United States, the film was rated NC-17 for "nudity and erotic sexuality throughout, some graphic language, and sexual violence." Showgirls was the first (and to date only) NC-17-rated film to be given a wide release in mainstream theaters.
