What are the X in Stetson hats? ›

In felt, it is determined by the percentage of furs used in making the hat body. We use beaver, mink, chinchilla and other animal fur to make bodies. The mixture of which furs we use determines the X's.

Hats are typically given an "X" rating by the hatter to indicate the material the hat was made from, and in turn, distinguish between the qualities of various hats. Orginally, the X was indicative of the percentage of beaver fur in the hat as compared to the other materials (typically wild hare).

Depending on the felt quality and amount of beaver utilized in construction, hat makers traditionally graded hats on a scale of 1X–10X. Hats between 1X–5X were usually made of wool and or hare with a small amount of beaver, if any. A 10X hat contained 100 percent beaver.

The original "Boss", manufactured by Stetson in 1865, was flat-brimmed, had a straight-sided crown with rounded corners. These lightweight, waterproof hats were natural in color, with four-inch crowns and brims. A plain hatband was fitted to adjust head size.
