The Hills reboot is canceled after two seasons on MTV (2024)

The Hills: New Beginnings has reportedly been canceled after just two seasons on MTV.

Sources close to the production told TMZ on Tuesday that the third season will be its last on the cable channel and that the cast was informed of the cancelation 'late last week.'

It was alleged that the original stars of The Hills had 'major issues' with the reboot, including the recent exploration by producers to bring on 'younger cast members.'

The outlet's sources claimed that producers thought the inclusion of 'younger' members would 'diversify' the cast but the notion was shot down by the original stars.

It was also alleged that 'some' of the original stars believed thatThe Hills: New Beginnings 'wasn't the show MTV promised them' and that it sometimes felt 'forced with fake storylines and confessionals.'

The original stars' frustration with the production caused an 'impasse between some stars and the network.'

Aside from alleged friction, it was also claimed that COVID-19 was to blame for the show's untimely cancelation since the strict protocols it made it increasingly harder to shoot and coordinate schedules for a large ensemble cast.

Fans were ecstatic when they learned in 2019 that The Hills was being rebooted, nine years after its finale in 2010.

Lauren Conrad was noticeably absent from The Hills reboot, despite being the central figure of the original show, which ran from 2006 until its 2010 finale.

Season one and season two consisted of 12 episodes each, as well as respective 'After Shows' rehashing the drama that took place.

TMZ's sources noted that although the production did not mimic the success of the original series, producers are still 'proud of what they were able to do in the middle of the worldwide pandemic.'

Another production source claimed that audiences have not seen the last of The Hills, as there is a reported reimagining of the show in the works aimed at 'unlock[ing] and maximiz[ing]' the audiences' love of the mid-2000s reality drama.
