In 1921, Charles "Chuck" Taylor, an American semi-professional basketball player for the Akron Firestone Non-Skids joined Converse as a salesman. Within a year of Taylor's arrival, the company had adopted his ideas for improvements to the shoe's design to enhance its flexibility and ankle support.

While the shoe was designed with optimised grip which meant players dash across the court with ease, after a few wears they found that the tread wore down and the grip became next to none. But arguably the biggest design flaw was the lack of midsole.

After the Columbus Commercials disbanded the following season, Taylor continued to pursue a career in professional basketball, which included playing for the Akron Firestone Non-Skids, a semi-professional team, as well as other semi-professional teams in Detroit, Michigan, and Chicago, Illinois.

Initially, “Chucks” were only available in high or low canvas in either black or white, and sold only in sporting goods stores. Converse All-Stars became the best-selling basketball shoe in history making Chuck Taylor's name a household word.

Taylor was a player and coach for the company's industrial basketball team, the “Converse All-Stars,” which was also the name of a style of sneakers he helped redesign. The company thought so much of his contributions, it added his name to the ankle patch in 1932.

Although canvas-rubber shoes regained popularity in the 1980s as casual footwear, Converse eventually became too dependent on the "All Stars" basketball brand, whose market collapsed by 1989–1990. By 2000, Converse was slipping repeatedly into receivership as debt piled up yearly.

Marquis Mills Converse founded the Converse Rubber Shoe Company in 1908 in Malden, Massachusetts. In 1917 the company designed the forerunner of the modern All Star shoe that it marketed under the name of "Non-Skids". The shoe was composed of a rubber sole and canvas upper and was designed for basketball players.

“The team was not in a league, but would travel through small Midwestern towns and challenge the local hot shots to a game.” By Aamidor's count, the All Stars played about 30 games a year. In addition to these games, Taylor hosted clinics to teach people the relatively new sport.

After lots of research and development, the very first version of the All Star basketball shoe was produced in 1917. The All Star shoe originally came in natural brown colors with black trim. In the 1920s, Converse All Stars were made in all black canvas or leather versions.

Though wholly owned by Nike, Converse has its own marketing, development, and supply chain that operates discretely from its parent, but that doesn't mean it hasn't contributed to Nike's woes.
