The lesser known harmful effects of smoking (2024)

When you mention smoking and health, most of us think of the obvious; smoking is implicated in one in five deaths in the U.S. (more than 443,000 people annually) and currently 20 percent of adults smoke with the rate being higher in younger males. Smoking causes lung cancer, cardiovascular disease and lung diseases such as emphysema.

However, few think of the lesser publicized health side effects of smoking and exposure to second hand smoke.

This became important to me recently as I was trying to think of a strategy to talk to my son about smoking. We know that successful quitters personalize the reasons to quit and lung cancer isn’t on the radar for most 20-something-year-old men. So how to personalize the message?

We have some clear strategies to help smokers quit and society has learned a lot over the last 25 years. Personalizing the reason to quit, changing behaviors and triggers to smoke as well as a number of medications designed to help quit and stay abstinent are available. Talk with your physician about the best plan to quit, including a review of the medications that might be appropriate for your use.

Back to the little known side effects … Smoking has some wicked effects on skin. Because of a decrease in blood flow and damage to collagen and elastin, it causes premature wrinkles, not only on the face but other areas of the body.

It causes a decrease in wound healing and an increase in post-op infections. Smoking has been linked to premature hair graying and hair loss.

Tar stained teeth, and an increase in tooth loss and gum disease might get his attention, not to mention kissing a smoker is like licking an ash tray.

There is an increase risk for other cancers including cervical, bladder, kidney, pancreas, mouth and throat cancer. Young women have an additional risk of decreased fertility and earlier menopause.

The damage to reproduction doesn’t stop at fertility. There is an increased rate of spontaneous miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, premature births and low birth weight babies in mothers who smoke or are exposed to second hand smoke. The risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) goes up with smoking parents. (Still not very good arguments for my unmarried son.) Smoking inhibits the lung’s ability to clean itself out, so respiratory infections like colds, pneumonia and influenza are increased in smokers.

For men, smoking lowers the sperm count, decreases sperm motility and increases abnormal shapes (and no it can’t be used as birth control).

Close, but not quite there.

Ah, here it is, smoking men have two times the rate of impotence (erectile dysfunction, ED) as their non-smoking counterparts and stopping improves ED. That’s it, “Son, if you smoke and don’t stop, the only thing you are going to be doing in those bath tubs in those ads is watching the sun set and getting wet!”
