I’m obsessed with Airbnb.
I’m at the point that I will look for an Airbnb first before searching for a hotel.
Airbnb can often provide a cheaper, healthier and more local-feel to travel.
My favorite benefits of staying in an Airbnb are as follows:
- I can choose to book a place with a kitchen to eat healthier and save money.
- I can choose to book an entire place so the experience feels private, versus a hotel where crowds of people gather.
- I can choose to book a place that both allows dogs and has a backyard.
- I can stay in a unique property that provides a unique experience that you rarely can get in a hotel.
In honor of my love for Airbnb, I’ve put together a fun Airbnb bucket list.

The keys to saving money on Airbnb are as follows:
- If you are staying longer than a few days, message the host asking for a discount (it works!)
- If the host does not have a kitchen, message them to ask for a hot plate or something where you can make some food (just did that & saved ?)

Even if you don’t want to retire early, becoming an Airbnb host is a great way to make extra money on the side.
Plenty of folks rent out a spare room every once and awhile, or their whole place when they’re on vacation.
Airbnb guests are often better than renting to regular tenants because often they only stay one night and you can charge more.

I really love this idea. There are cool places to go, but there are also cool places to stay. We rented an AirBnB in Lisbon this summer and the apartment was just as fun as the city. It was awesome, it looked right over the square. It had two large glass doors in the living room that would open up onto small balconies overlooking the street. We just sat and drank wine as our kids slept.

I’ve seen that hobbit house before listed somewhere, I hear it’s one of the most popular Airbnbs to stay in, in the world! All of those sound pretty awesome. I only stay at Airbnbs now, it’s so much easier than hotels!

What, where’s my Airbnb listing? You don’t want to stay in an old house with a weird personal finance dork?
But on another note, asking for discounts…ugh. I’ll say for me, if someone asks me for a discount, I instant reject. And from being in a lot of Airbnb host facebook groups, it’s a pretty similar viewpoint.
Here’s my rationale: reviews mean everything for my Airbnb listing. If someone asks for a discount, it means they’re already expressing dissatisfaction with something of mine – in this case, my price. From my own thinking, if they’re not happy with my price, what else might they be unhappy with? I might rather leave my place empty than risk a bad review.
Similarly, if I say no to their discount request and they opt to stay, what sort of review do I risk? They’re already going to be unhappy with the price, which means they’ll likely be unhappy with everything in the house, especially if they now feel like they overpaid.
Just my thoughts anyway on the discount front, coming from the host perspective.

AirBnb is the way to go! I totally do the same thing and look there first before considering hotels. You get to stay in some awesome places and get more of a local feel for a town, rather than being right in the heart of the touristy-chaos. Used it both in the states and internationally and stayed at some pretty killer places.

These places all look amazing! I don’t think our new Airbnb would qualify along the lines of say, the Hobbit House. Man.
