The Vogue Guide To Salon & Spa Etiquette (2024)

If you've had a bad experience before: "If you're nervous or it's your first time ever getting your brows done, say something! We can adjust the treatment to you. For example, if a client is nervous about their tint being too dark, I work very gradually, wiping it off at intervals of about thirty seconds so it doesn't go too dark."

If you're unsure how to prepare: "I would actually suggest coming with whatever brow pencil or product you usually wear, because then your therapist can get an idea of how you like your brows to look. We'll cleanse make-up off before we start."

If you're terrible with pain: "Everyone's different, but constant flinching can make the process of say, threading take longer. Try taking a paracetamol before you come in, and avoid hair removal around your period when you're generally more sensitised to pain."

On tipping: "American clients tend to tip, but I wouldn't say it's expected. If you want to tip, roughly 10% is standard."

Nails

Juanita Huber-Millet is the founder of the much-loved Fitzrovia nail spot, Townhouse. She explained there's no need for nerves, no matter how anxious you may be.

If you're embarrassed about the state of your nails: "Don’t be! We all have had bad nails and toes at some point in our lives. As long as it is not a medical issue, a professional salon is the best bet. I would suggest booking a "full" treatment rather than an "express" one so you therapist has plenty of time to deal with your areas of concern."

If your mani-pedi seems sub-par: "Therapists feel motivated by happy customers and don't want to disappoint. Please don’t worry about being honest if you are disappointed - it's better to let your therapist know during the treatment if there is something you are unhappy with, and the sooner you say, the more likely it is that it can be corrected then and there."

On tipping: "Tipping should not be expected, no matter the service. Most customers who choose to tip give around 10%, and most salons add tips from card payments to staff wages at the end of the month, and cash tips are handed out at the end of the day. I honestly have never gone back to salons that made me feel like I had to tip as I believe tipping should be a kind gesture rather than a necessity. Another lovely way to show your appreciation of a salon and staff member is by leaving an online review to highlight to other customers how fantastic the service was."
