THEORIES OF CLOTHING

Clothing theories are developed based upon theuse and growth of clothing. The four major theories of clothing are mod-esty,immodesty, and adornment and pro-jection theory.

Modesty Theory

The basic importance of clothing is to cover orconceal the private parts of the human body.

Example: Leaves used around the waistand bust, by Stone Age women as clothing.

Immodesty Theory

Historical records on clothing, mention aboutclothing used to attract opposite sex. According to this theory the basic ideaof clothing is attraction seeking.

Example: Tight fitting pants and garmentswhich expose body parts.

Adornment Theory

Right from the origin of mankind, peo-ple weretrying to beautify themselves. Clothing has always supported this idea andhelped one to form beautiful appear-ance. Wearing beautiful garments gives anaesthetic appearance.

Example: Decorated blouse with embroideryand stone work.

Protection Theory

Clothes have always been used for protec-tionagainst extreme climatic conditions such as winter, rainy and summer. Exposureto dangerous materials and environment such as furnace, boiler and thermals stationsrequire special clothing.

Example: Woolen coats – winter season,rain coats – rainy season and boiler suits – for people working in a furnace.
