The next time you load up the Tim Hortons app on your smartphone, take a closer look at the home screen because you may just find new in-app digital coupons to use.

As first spotted by members of our forum community on January 22nd, it appears Tim Hortons has just launched digital coupon offers within their popular app to select customers.

Now on top of being able to place mobile orders and collect Tims Rewards, you’ll also be able to take advantage of special coupon offers. This puts their mobile app on par with McDonald’s which has had in-app exclusive offers for some time now.

The offers appear to only be available on existing accounts which have recent activity and exclude dormant and newly created accounts according to multiple reports from our community members.

There are 4-digital coupons being offered per account and they appear to be randomly selected from the recently released mailer coupons. The offers must be activated before use by clicking the “Activate” button and will automatically apply to mobile orders or when you scan your digital or physical rewards card at the register.

The current set of digital coupons being offered to customers expire on January 26th where as the mailer coupons expire on February 11th.

It’s currently unknown if Tim Hortons plans to always offer digital coupons, only when there’s a corresponding set of mailer coupons available, or at completely random times. Either way, frequent Tim Hortons customers should be happy that they’re finally getting ways to save money on their purchases.

Have you seen or used the new digital in-app coupons at Tim Hortons? Let us know in the comments below.

    • Here's the start of Round #3! I see the Timmies app has refreshed the mobile coupons (these ones good from Feb 3 to Feb 9). In my case, the one I used last week has been replaced with a different one, but the other 3 are the same as previous 2 weeks. Mine this week are: 2 Farmer's Breakfast Wraps for $5 (repeat), $1.99 medium iced capp (repeat), $1.99 classic breakfast sandwich (repeat), and $0.99 classic muffin (for me, this replaces the $3.49/6 donuts).

    • So much for the promos being good until Feb 2! Timmies is kinda failing at this in-app offers thing.

I wonder if offers that were "Activated" in the app, prior to them disappearing, would still be honoured if redeemed before the expiry (Feb 2). I already redeemed the 6 donut one earlier in the week, so nothing left to try (none of the other offers appealed to me).

Guess we'll see how round #3 goes.

I don't trust the in app offer anymore. I now just scan and store mailer coupon qr code into Google pay and use it in store. It works each time. Just make sure you scan the coupon before scanning the Tim rewards.

    • Same offers here too, which makes sense considering the physical paper flyer is good up until Mid-February.

I'm not sure how the expiry and the repeated offers ties together; I would've anticipated a rotation of offers in the app since it's 40% of what shows up in the mailer. From a marketing/data-collection standpoint, I'd also expect them to rotate offers to see which ones have a higher uptake/interest. By repeating last week's, and not showing consumers different coupons, they've lost out on that opportunity, and largely lost interest of many users (e.g. I'm less excited to anticipate the next cycle of offers, after seeing this week's repeat...)

    • Just got new offers in the app. They expire in 4 days. The same 4 offers as the ones I had before, maybe because I didn't use any of the last ones before they expired on the 26th.

Ditto (finally)! Same 4 that I got last time also, just in a different order. This time they state 01/29 until 02/02, whereas last week they stated 01/20 - 01/26, even though they were released on 01/22.

Still nothing new this week! Last week's run probably revealed some bugs in the system, identified the need to send a memo out to employees, etc. Was probably a pretty soft/low-key launch/test.

I think some stores got memos about a mandatory surrendering of paper coupons (to avoid coupon re-use), which conflicted with the messaging regarding the in-app coupon that was applied to the loyalty/rewards card. TH staff appeared confused and response to coupons has been mixed. Maybe the boardroom suits have decided to let one promo end before starting the next; time will tell...

    • App sucks. Automatically uses my reward for a small coffee when I could’ve got s big one. Cashier said it wouldn’t but it did. Wtf

The cashier has no control over reward redemptions, the system will redeem on an eligible item if you have a reward available whether you want to redeem or not. It's not like Starbucks where you have to let them know you want to redeem a reward.

    • Was this a recent change?. In July 2019 I could not bank rewards. I had gift cards that I wanted to redeem but couldn't as the reward redemption was applied first. I guess I didn't get any mailer offers cuz my acct is inactive

I never looked at the program details back then, but under the "How does the program work?" section, they currently show "... the next time you go into a Tims and purchase a coffee or tea (any size) or a baked good, except bagels or timbits, your Reward will be applied to that transaction. If you want to bank your reward you can do so by ordering through the mobile app and choosing not to apply your reward to that order. You can bank up to 5 rewards."

It further goes into details about banking:

      How can I bank Rewards?
If you use the mobile app to order ahead and pay then you can choose to bank your reward at the point of checkout! When scanning a physical or digital card in-restaurant we will automatically calculate which is the highest priced eligible item in your order and apply the reward to it.

Key Rules / Restrictions of the Tims Rewards program

To keep the program fair we have included a few rules:

Transactions less than $0.50 after the application of other discounts (like a roll up the rim tab) won’t count towards your next reward. If you use a Tims Reward however we’ll still count it!

There has to be 30 minutes between Reward transactions. Purchases made within 30 minutes of a previous Rewards transaction will not count towards your next Reward.

If you are using mobile order and pay you can bank up to 5 Rewards on your account at any one time. Any Rewards earned above this will not be saved on your account until you have used the Rewards existing on your account.

Any banked but unused Reward will expire after 120 days.

App sucks. Automatically uses my reward for a small coffee when I could’ve got s big one. Cashier said it wouldn’t but it did. Wtf

Well, if you're scanning the rewards card in the app (as opposed to doing a mobile order), then it's not really the app itself that's at fault here, but the Tims Rewards program. Whether you scan your rewards card (physical) or the code in your app at the point-of-sales in-store, it will immediately redeem to the highest priced eligible item that you've ordered (so if you ordered only a small coffee, it will redeem against that).

I'm pretty sure it was possible to bank rewards since the Tims Rewards program was in effect (from the beginning of 2019 I think?), by mobile ordering instead of scanning the rewards card in-store.

I know that it's still not possible to prevent a reward from automatically being redeemed when scanning rewards card at the store if you have a reward available and the order has an eligible item to be redeemed for. If there are multiple eligible items in the order then it will redeem on the highest priced one.

Also, it's not possible to redeem multiple rewards in a single order if you have multiple banked, so you would need to do them in separate orders and wait 30 mins between orders. The 30 min rule applies to earning and redeeming.

In your case, you could link all the gift cards to the Tim Hortons app. They would be all combined into one card. The first card linked to the app permanently becomes the digital balance available to use for mobile ordering, and all future gift cards linked get transferred to the first card. Whether you load on the app or load that physical card in the store, it's the same balance. Then just mobile order and you'll be able to defer reward redemption and instead pay with the Tim Card balance while continuing to earn rewards points.

Mobile ordering was already available with the Tim Hortons app for years before the rewards program, they just updated the app with rewards tracking, earning and redemption.

When placing an mobile order with the app, from what I remember, it always gave an option to use a reward if available and if an eligible item was in the order, provided that the last order (either mobile or by scanning rewards card in-store) was more than 30 mins ago.

    • Thanks a lot for explaining, I won't bother with the physical loyalty card then.

I have a ton of GC credit with Starbucks (multiple Groupon deals in the past, and now Paytm), so I've never thought about collecting stars with other payment methods than GC, but don't empty physical Starbucks cards work like loyalty cards, then pay with whatever you like?

You'll only get stars for the purchase amount deducted from the registered Starbucks card (excluding tax). A physical card would need to be registered to a Starbucks account and have funds loaded to earn stars.

So if you made a purchase pre-tax for $8 and paid $5 from a Starbucks card and the rest from a credit card, you'd earn 10 stars (2 for every $1) but if you paid in full with the Starbucks card, you'd earn 16 stars.

    • Still no offers even after a purchase, so thanks a lot for those posting QR codes and mailer coupons.

Do I need to grab a physical rewards card and register with the app in order to receive offers?

I rarely go to Tim's, I've learned today that we need to scan the barcode for the virtual card to collect points on coffees, go back, then pull out the gift card code. I've been simply scanning gift card code only, just like Starbucks app, so I guess that's why I haven't been collecting any points till today?

I've scanned 3 codes today to complete a purchase: a coupon, the rewards, then the gift card in app. How backward!

Linking a physical rewards card just allows you to scan either the one on the app or the physical card, and it'll be the same QR code on both. If you used the physical card before linking it, the points will be combined (physical card + digital card on the app). I have multiple Tims App accounts and I can tell you that I received mobile offers on one of my accounts that never did any mobile orders or had any Tim Card linked, and only scanned the digital rewards card (no physical linked), but this account was created a while ago.

Yeah, the Tims Rewards card and Tim Card are not linked in any way. Would be nice if rewards and payment were linked, like with Starbucks as you mentioned. Even Second Cup has rewards and payment on the same card. However, Tims has the advantage of not having to pay with a Tim Card to collect rewards points.

I clicked "activate" and than it says, its activated and the cashier has to scan the tim's card QR code. I did that, and the lady says there should be a "number" to scan in, all it says is "activated" and the instructions below are for the cashier to scan tims card. She was so rude and not even helping. I ordered a bunch of stuff, and she wasn't being helpful so I just left my order and left. Pissed me off she didn't even offer any help, and wasn't even trying to scam the tims card.

This is what Tim's has become. IT's going to end up like Country Style in a few years.

If you want nice clear regenerated QR codes to scan, have a look at this post. I decoded the codes from the mailer coupons, and then re-generated them using a QR code generator so that they'll consistently scan cleanly. Or, anyone can use the content string and generate their own QR codes of whatever dimensions/resolution they want...

All Tim Hortons locations I've visited have allowed me to just scan the codes off my phone without having to surrender any coupon... I usually ask to scan my coupon, loyalty/reward, and then sometimes pay using Tims Card balance, all off my phone.
