Top 10 U.S. Manufacturing Companies (1)

5 MIN. READ

For as long as the U.S. has been an independent country, manufacturing has been a staple of its commerce. Although U.S. manufacturing as a whole has faced a slew of challenges in recent years, the industry remains a core element of the country's economy.

In 1970, the manufacturing industry accounted for 24.3% of U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP). That's double what it was in 2018.

While the U.S. is still the largest manufacturer in the world (accounting for 18.2% of the world's goods), the gap between it and other countries is closing fast.

China manufactured 17.6% of the world's products, making it a close second.

Multiple factorsplay into the decline of the U.S. manufacturing industry. Other countries - particularly in the Asian market - have fewer worker protections and corporate taxes, making manufacturing in those countries far cheaper than manufacturing in the U.S.

Additionally, a global move toward a service-based economy has eliminated many manufacturing positions. At the same time, alack of workers exists to supply other positions not absorbedby technologies like automation or the internet of things (IoT).

Finally, President Donald Trump'snegation of free-trade agreements and tariffs has cost specific industries integral to the manufacturing industry, such as steel, billions of dollars.

Despite these factors, U.S. manufacturing is by no means dying. How manufacturers account for these trends will determine the strength of the industry in the coming years.
