What is a true name in Pathfinder? ›

True Name is a Wizard Discovery that they can take at 11th Wizard level and above. It lets you essentially take the name of an outsider that you can summon once a day to serve you faithfully, obeying your every whim, out of fear that you might reveal its True Name to others.

According to practices in folklore, referred to as 'the Law of Names'; knowledge of a true name allows one to affect another person or being magically. It is stated that knowing someone's, or something's, true name therefore gives the person (who knows the true name) power over them.

You instruct the target to do something, compelling obedience by calling it by its true name. Your instructions can't be self-destructive. Though this spell has the linguistic trait, this applies only to the instructions; the creature doesn't need to know its own true name to be affected.

This amulet bears the true name of a single creature with a level no higher than the item's level. These amulets are typically made of gold and engraved, but could be made of anything, including simple clay. The name is clearly visible, though only to you, and only while you have the amulet invested.
