If you travel to Venice for a weekend or for at least three days, you should definitely think about buying a Vaporetto Pass for the city.
Let’s do the math:
Knowing that the price of a trip on a vaporetto line costs €9.50,
And that it’s almost certain that you will ride the vaporetto at least 3 times a day in Venice
you have a minimum budget of €28.50 /day that you’ll spend on a vaporetto, or €57 for a weekend.
The Venice water bus pass sold by ACTV and Venizia Unica costs €25 for 1 day, €35 for 2 days, and €45 for 3 days, and €65 for 7 days.
So, it already pays off after 1 day, and is definitely worth it for a weekend in Venice, as it comes out cheaper and gives you unlimited freedom of movement. A 3 day Venice vaporetto pass (72h for €45) allows you to save even more on transportation in the Serenissima and its lagoon. Moreover, if you plan to visit the islands of Murano and Burano, you need to plan at least 2 tickets, because a ticket is only valid for 75 minutes, see our page dedicated to vaporetto timetables in Venice. Do your math, but in my opinion a vaporetto package helps you save money as well as time waiting in line.
Seeing Venice from a water bus ride, admiring the architecture of the Venetian palazzi from every angle and light, is essential for any visit to the Serenissima! In the evening, when you want to go back to your hotel or apartment, it is also nice to be able to take a vaporetto without worrying about buying a ticket or getting lost in the alleys. In addition, not all the vaporetto terminals sell tickets, and for those that do, the ticket office can be a few dozen meters away from the ride or closed late at night.

Why is everyone confused about the price of transportation in Venice?
First of all, the 1-day, 2-day and 3-day transportation passes stopped including the Airport-Venice trip in 2010. To get to the city from the airport, you can either take the orange A.C.T.V. buses, the blue A.T.V.O. buses, or the Alilaguna. And finally, my dear Angel, there’s the pass that complements the ACTV vaporetto pass: the one that combines a visit to Saint Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, with a guided tour in English, plus access to the terraces overlooking Saint Mark’s Square, and a rare visit to the Bridge of Sighs and the new prisons. One last thing, there is a card for residents that is open to non-residents who come to Venice regularly for the biennale or the carnival, for example. This card is called the Venezia Unica card, it is valid for 5 years and costs 100€. It allows you to buy packs of 10 tickets at 1€40 per ticket for all lines except 16 and 19 and the Alilaguna (there is a discount for the Venice airport trip in the Alilaguna: 16€ instead of 27€).
