Rich Victorians clothes

Rich woman

In the Victorian times a rich woman's casual everyday wear would consist of drawers which are basically long knickers, they wore a corset which is a hard version of the top of a dress without any sleeves and a ribbon at the back to tighten it up they wore it because in those days it looked good having a tiny waist and a large bottom. They would also wear a crinoline. A crinoline is a metal petticoat which would go under a skirt/bottom of a dress and make the skirt look bigger and wider.Next they would put on their dress which was probably nice fancy one. After that they would put on a bustle, this is a ruffled part of the dress making the top of the dress look higher and puffier. Then they would probably put something in or on their hair to finish of the look.Their outfits were probably extremely uncomfortable.

Rich man

A rich Victorian man would wear a vest, a long armed buttoned shirt, a waist coat, trousers, coat and a top hat to dress the head. In the Victorian times almost every decade the fashion for rich men had changed. If Queen Victorias husband or sons were seen wearing something new it would be a priority for all rich males to get that piece of
clothing.

Rich children

Rich girls would wear the same as their mothers except they would be smaller and the skirt would be just below their knees instead of being down to their feet.Little boys used to wear dresses up until the age of five .They wore dresses because it was easier for the mother or maid to change their nappies and easier for the child to go to the toilet. They would not really wear trousers but when boys were older they did this is what they wore trousers, a vest ,shirt and a coat. The Victorian boy would also often wear a sailors suit.

Poor children

Poor Victorian children wore second hand stitched and patched up clothes, when it has been stitched the child is given the piece of clothing. When the child has grown out of the clothes they are passed down family. Poor children have three sets of clothes two for the week and if they were lucky enough they would have one for special Sunday. Poor children wouldn't usually wear shoes because their parents could not afford them. The poor children wouldn't even wear shoes in the winter and would have to walk bare feet.

The Poor men

The poor Victorians basically wore the same clothes as the rich Victorians except the clothes were much older and tattered because of all the many other times it had been worn and wrecked. Poor Victorian men wore a vest, a shirt, a bow tie, coat (sometimes even down to their knees because it was bought from a 3rd or 4th hand shop and they wouldn't try it on to see if it was the right size for them) pants, trousers, rarely shoes and a cap.

The poor Victorian women

Poor Victorian women wore thin dirty dresses which were dark colours and made from cotton or wool because silk and linen would be far too expensive and wouldn't last as long as they needed them to last for ages. Poor women would also wear a bonnet which would protect their hair from lice and getting caught in the machines.Poor women would usually only have one dress but if they were lucky they would have two. They didn't have three or four dresses because there wasn't any sowing machines to make them at home because they didn't have enough money for one.
