Barnes & Noble History

Charles M. Barnes launched a book company from his house in Wheaton, Illinois, in 1873, and Barnes & Noble was born. His son, William, moved to New York in 1917 to join G. Clifford Noble in founding Barnes & Noble.

This business has gained a worldwide reputation for quality by serving millions of clients with its extensive choice of global trading books, academic materials and textbooks, and medical publications. It is one of the best bookstores in the world every reader should visit.

Transformations

In 1971, bookseller Leonard Riggio bought the Barnes & Noble trademark and leading shop in Manhattan, combining it with his booming bookstore. He transformed the Barnes & Noble Fifth Avenue location in New York City into "The World's Largest Bookstore" in just a few years, stocking 150,000 textbooks and trade publications.

The Company made additional acquisitions in the 1970s and 1980s, adding new bookshops around the country. The Company bought B. Dalton Bookseller in 1987, it completed its most significant acquisition – 797 retail shops – and instantly became a countrywide retailer and America's second-largest bookseller. The Company also bought Doubleday Book Shops and the Scribner's bookstore trade brand.

New Ideas Bring Variety

In the 1990s, Mr. Riggio started up with the "superstore" concept, which transformed bookselling by bringing together a wide range of titles, knowledgeable bookselling staff, and a welcoming, spacious setting. The enterprises offered music, books, games, instructional toys, and gifts.

The Turn Of A Century

The Company acquired a renowned study aids website in 2001, and Sterling Publishing in 2003, which had been in business for more- than half a century and had an extensive print collection.

With the purchase of Fictionwise in 2009, the firm entered the eBook industry. It created the NOOK® range of e-Reading products that offer a digital, fun, easy-to-use, and integrated reading experience. Over several years, it has made many tablet and e-reader devices. Waldenbooks & Borders became part of the business in 2011.

Barnes & Noble began testing new prototype shops in select areas around the US in 2016, with a contemporary style, enhanced food & beverage services, and comfortable seating for an inviting customer experience.

Under New Ownership

Barnes & Noble was taken private by Elliott- Advisors (UK) Limited in August of 2019. Elliott purchased Barnes & Noble after purchasing Waterstones, the largest retail bookshop in the United Kingdom, in June 2018. Barnes & Noble has named James Daunt, the MD of Waterstones, as its next CEO. Mr. Daunt has approximately 30 years of bookselling expertise.

He founded his bookshop, Daunt Books, in London in 1990, following a brief stint as an investment banker. Daunt Books today has nine locations, most of which are in London and cozy up in London with its best bookstores.
