Welded Black Iron Grease duct: the basics - Madon Sheet Metal (2024)

Black Iron Grease duct is fabricated to safely transfer contaminated air, grease vapors, and heat.

In a commercial kitchen, grease is heated to its vaporization point. Vapors then cool, condense and settle on colder surfaces. This produces a highly flammable hydrocarbon which can be very dangerous. Therefore, expert sheet metal workers must install well fabricated black iron ductwork so that the vapors can be safely vented out of the building.

Well fabricated grease ducts are essential to meeting Passive fire protection (PFP) standards. When ordering grease duct, be sure to work with fabricators who specialize in welding. Also, be sure that all duct from your fabricator is in compliance with NFPA 96.

When you order grease duct, here are some questions to ask about your fabricator:

Are you working with a shop that specifically specializes in welding?

Does your fabricator employ certified MIG and TIG welders?

  • Certified welders can reliably produce quality welds that meet or exceed industry standards.

What are the gauge standards of your fabricator?

  • Custom shops will often also have heavier gauge standards than other shops.

Does your fabricator consider ease of installation?

  • Working with shops that specialize in black iron welding will also allow you to save time in the field because the duct will be easy to install.

Consider what can be welded in the shop rather than in the field

  • Save significant time and money by talking to your field installers and your fabricators about how to avoid the need for welding in the field.
