None of those are very profitable unless you are selling thousands every day.

Gold, weapons, drugs, personal data, counterfeit goods and ransomeware-as-a-service are all highly profitable

You won't get a clear answer here simply because it's not possible. Another answer to your question in addition to those above is rare jewellery (picking something at random).

Any company that's selling things and makes a profit is selling things that are profitable (excluding corruption, dodgy accounting etc). Some people may find selling rare jewellery very profitable whilst others go out of business. For the same products. To be in business you need to be good at sourcing, marketing, logistics, customer experience etc etc depending on what you're selling and who to in which market.

Even if it were possible to say that of all the products in the world, that product x is the most profitable small item, that doesn't mean you could make money from it. It might be a monopoly or need a skill you don't have.

There are books and websites about what it takes to start and run a business. They'll probably be of more use to you in how to go about this.

That’s not true. The markup on these items is often very small if you want to be competitive. It’s also a saturated market.

The real answer to OP is 'The items you can buy for the lowest cost and sell for the most profit'

Sadly, these are too few and far between. What happens is someone finds something that is profitable and sell well and either they reduce the price to sell more volume or other people start competing in a price war.,

Other strategies are to compete on quality and/or customer service. It's easily said but you have to be good at it if you want to charge more than competitors.

Invent something that people want corner the market.

Fishing accessories, About 20 years ago i used to manufacture plastic fishing accessory products for a friend of mine who used to sell on Ebay.

I sold these products for pennies and sold them with healthy margins but then he moved away from London and i lost track of him.

You can buy these products from UK suppliers or you can import them from China through paid Alibaba member manufacturers
