What Does 'Dressy Casual' on an Invitation Even Mean? (2024)

"Being well dressed hasn't much to do with having good clothes. It’s a question of good balance and good common sense.” These words, said by the late American designer Oscar de la Renta are ones we aspire to emulate. However, when receiving an invitation with the words “dressy casual attire required,” it might make you pause. After all, how does one actually define “dressy casual” or any other dress code for that matter?

We tapped fashion and etiquette experts to find out what you should wear for each invitation dress code.

Dressy Casual

Jocelyn Gailliot, the CEO and co-founder of the fashion brand Tuckernuck, knows a thing or two about being well dressed, and she reveals that there’s a bit of a formula when it comes to mastering the often-used dress designation.

“As confusing as it sounds, dressy casual means taking a minimal and understated approach, while still incorporating some elevated accessories,” she shares.

When it comes to dressing the part of dressy casual, Gailliot says we shouldn’t shy away from closet staples for this fancier-than-usual occasion. One of her secret weapons for the perfect dressy casual look is “a great pair of denim.”

Wide Leg Jeans

“A wide leg or a coated metallic pair elevates the simplest of tops,” she says. “Any statement accessory, whether it be a dramatic earring, a party shoe, or a chic evening bag, is an easy way to make your look feel cool and fresh.”

With terms like dressy casual, it's easy to overthink it. Lizzie Post, the CEO of the Emily Post Institute says to keep things simple.

“It’s important to recognize that [the dress code] is really relative to your situation,” explains Post. Thinking about what your friends typically wear as well as the styles that are popular where you live are important aspects to think about as you decide what to wear.

Black Tie

Nowadays, as dressing tens to be more informal, black-tie attire is as elegant as you can get. Reserved for only the most special occasions like a gala or wedding, black tie is where you can show off your best dressed looks.

"My favorite look for black tie is a long, dramatic dress," Gailliot reveals. "This could be a classic black gown or a fun print. This time of year, I often add velvet for an extra dressy touch, whether it be a hair accessory or heels."

Black tie was originally started at the social club Tuxedo Park in New York. Now, Post shares that it's the only dress code that should be written out explicitly on a wedding invitation.

"For a wedding, the only [attire designation] you’re supposed to use is black tie, and everything other than that you should know by the date, the time of the wedding and the time of year," Post shares.

There are now subsections of black tie like black tie optional and festive attire. For these designations, still think refined and elegant, but Gailliot says black tie optional "gives you a bit more flexibility." She adds, "You want to be dressy, but you don’t need to pull out your best gown. If you go for a mini dress, tights are a great way to dress it up."

co*cktail

Also known as semi-casual attire, co*cktail is when you can pull out your pieces that are too fun for dressy casual and not elegant enough for black tie.

"For co*cktail, you can’t go wrong with a party skirt," Gailliot explains. "If opting for a print, I would choose a solid top in a similar shade so you create that tonal look that’s so in right now. Otherwise, I love a good black sequin midi skirt."

However, if you are ever in doubt, go for something that makes you feel the most comfortable and confident and following the recommended dress code.

"I am a big believer that the success of an event depends on the energy of the guests; everyone should be able to relax and enjoy themselves! Showing up in the wrong attire can ruin your comfort level pretty quickly," Gailliot says. "So, one of the easiest ways to avoid this is by dressing the part. Plus, dressing in a theme is fun!"
