The latest to hit the scene are known as bruh girls, and in case you didn’t know already, they’re not like the other girls.

The Bruhgirls hashtag has been viewed on the platform over 103 million times, with memes typically focusing on the difference between bruh girls, and their juxtaposing personality type hiii girly girls (also classified by the pleading face emoji – the one with the puppy dog eyes).

There’s been some controversy around grouping people – particularly women – like this, so it’s best to take the classifications with a pinch of salt.

What is a bruh girl?

A bruh girl is the type of girl who doesn’t care about appearances, eats plenty, swears, burps, drinks, and is essentially ‘one of the guys’.

She’s the one who says ‘bruh’ to her parents and enjoys stereotypically male pursuits, finding softness and femininity pretty cringe.

Famous and fictional women who might be classified as bruh girls would include Billie Eilish, Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Jennifer Lawrence (back in the hashtag relatable times when she was always eating pizza and falling over) or the protagonist in Taylor Swift’s You Belong With Me (‘She wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts, she’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers’).

Memes have been popping up like crazy depicting this bruh girl, who tends to wear her hair up in a bun with a hoodie and sweatpants and eat a lot of junk food.

Traits of a bruh girl would include toughness, sarcastic humour, and a lack of self-consciousness.

What is a hiii girl?

A hiii girl (or ‘hey girly’ or 🥺 girl) is the exact opposite of the bruh girl. She’s sweet and sensitive with a lot of female friends.

If you see her around or send her a message, she’d say ‘hiii’ or ‘hey girly’ – which is where the name originated.

She likes skincare, clothes, taking pictures, and basically doing everything that the bruh girl would roll her eyes at.

The problem with these stereotypes is really that they’re pitted against each other.

Most of the user base of TikTok is young – like, under 25 young – and most of these memes are made by teenagers who, naturally, want to be understood and feel part of something.

That sometimes lead to fairly normal behaviours for most people being put into a box of ‘feminine’ or ‘masculine’, and can create a divide which isn’t exactly healthy.

The idea of a ‘cool’ girl who espouses stereotypically male traits has also been compared to a ‘pick me’ – someone who doesn’t show their real emotions or tries to be a certain way to seem ‘low maintenance’ and attractive to partners.

In reality, we know that you can be the type of woman who loves wearing dresses while also play-fighting with your friends and eating lots of food. You can look like a ‘tomboy’ but have a 10-step skincare routine and love pumpkin spiced lattes.

Rumour has it that the bruh girl and the hiii girl originally began as a stereotype of a lesbian partnership with one femme and one butch woman.

We much prefer this really, as it means that both sides can coexist in love, without needing to pull the other one down.
