Want to know the basic difference between ethnic & western wear and whether ethnic wear refers to Indian garments? Get a better understanding of all these different types of garments from our experts.
We find in big stores and malls different sections for ethnic dresses and western dresses. What are the main difference between the these two types of dresses? Is ethnic dress same as Indian dress? Are the ethnic dresses of different regions of India different?

Ethnic dresses are the "Desi" dress of India. It's origin is from India. Now South Indians wear "Panche" and "lungi". This is their native dress. So this is a type of ethnic dress. Now North Indian people were Sherwani. So this an ethnic dress form. Sikhs were turban and Kurtas. These are their ethnic forms. Muslims were Burka, Hijab, Abaya and veil. These are their ethnic dress. Now Indian women wear saree, this is also our ethnic dress forms. In the same manner, Western country people wear Jeans, Suits, Pants, T shirts, Bermuda etc . So it is their ethnic form. Basically to say in short, they are the clothes of respective countries. For western people it will be Pants and shirt their ethnic dress and rest Eastern dresses. So nothing superior or inferior. It's just in the mind of people.

As said above, ethnic dress is local tradition one whereas western dress are different one and they too differs country to country and region to region in most of the cases. In India, ethnic dress differs from state to state or even district to district and sometime from one religion to other religion or caste too. In MNC companies, once in a week or a month, Admin or Management used to inform their staff to wear ethnic dress during Friday or a day before weekend or holiday, or a day before festival etc. just to have some local sentiment with enjoying festival essences in the office atmosphere. Male and Female would wear as per their choice of ethnic dress and arrive to office to have fun as well.

There is a remarkable difference between Ethnic and western dresses which can be noticed if you have tried to observe these in malls or other shopping centers.
Ethnic dresses includes salwar suits, sarees, lehenga, anarkali dresses for females and dhoti, kurta, sherwani etc for males. These can be anything with Indian origin.
Western wears are as the name indicates are adopted from Western countries. These includes, trousers, jeans, T-Shirts, shots, etc.
