Types of Benches

The following are standard bench dimensions. Use the image below to ensure you are measuring correctly.

What Is the Standard Bench Height?

The standard bench height is 18" – 20". This height is suitable for a bench at a dining room table. Note that bench height refers to the distance from the seat to the ground.

What Is the Standard Bench Depth?

The standard bench depth is between 15" and 20". A dining room bench tends to fall around 17.5" deep. A bench that is deeper than 20" might cause discomfort when sitting.

What Is the Standard Bench Width?

The standard bench width is between 42" and 60" and depends on the number of people you are looking to seat. For reference, a 42" – 52" bench can accommodate two adults comfortably. A bench between 53" and 80" wide is typically for three adults, and a bench more than 80" wide tends to accommodate four. Read a product's specifications to determine its exact seating capacity.

Here are some important tips to keep in mind when measuring for a bench.

Clearance: Make sure there is enough space between your bench and other objects in the room. If your bench will serve as table seating, there should be at least 48" of clearance between the table and any walls or furniture. This will leave enough space for you to completely pull the bench out from the table without bumping into anything. If your bench sits against a wall or bed, leave at least 36" of clearance between the bench and any other items. Every space is different, so be sure to measure your room's unique layout.

Table Height: An average table is between 28" and 30" high, with a standard height of 30". A standard bench height of 18" will fit comfortably with a table of this size. If your table is taller or shorter, adjust your bench height to accommodate this change. We recommend allowing for 12" of space between the seat and the bottom of the table.
