Triple sec (originally referred to as Curaçao triple sec) is a sweet and colourless orange-flavored liqueur. It is a type of Curaçao liqueur, an orange-flavoured liqueur made from the dried peels of both bitter and sweet oranges. Triple sec liqueurs are usually made with a neutral spirit base made of sugar beets. Sugar beet spirit is commonly chosen due to the neutral flavour compared to that of grain, grape and sugar cane spirit. Dried orange peel is steeped in the neutral spirit and then re-distilled. The highly concentrated orange flavoured spirit is cut with water and sugar is added.
‘Sec’ is French for dry so it translates to ‘triple dry’. Possibly a reference to triple distillation of the base spirit or the bitter (dry) orange peels that are used. Cointreau claims that it refers to the three types of peel used in the recipe.
