What Should You Wear to a Broadway Show? (2024)

You're making plans for your first trip to New York City. Your travel is booked, your hotel stay is confirmed, and most importantly, you just secured tickets to your favorite Broadway show! As you pack your suitcase, one big question remains: What's the dress code for Broadway?

The short answer: There isn't one.

That's right, regardless of the show you are seeing, the time of day you are seeing it, or the theatre you are seeing it at, there is no official dress code for Broadway. There is no need to stress about what to wear to a Broadway show. As long as you don't arrive in your birthday suit, you won't be denied entry to a Broadway or off Broadway theatre. Here's just two helpful tips to help guide your outfit selection:

1. Dress respectfully. Gone are the days when you had to dress to the nines to go to the theatre. Though some audience members will arrive in their best co*cktail attire, or even formal dress, both are absolutely not mandatory, and in fact, those people will be in the minority. That being said, wearing your pajamas probably isn't your best move. Instead, think about what you would wear to a nice dinner, or a night out on the town. Regardless of whether you are attending a matinee or an evening show, wearing jeans is perfectly acceptable.

2. Dress comfortably. Remember that you'll be sitting in one spot for hours at a time. Make sure your outfit doesn't keep you from enjoying the show!

Note: If you are attending a show in the height of summer, it's important to note that all Broadway theaters are air conditioned, so you don't need to worry about sweating through your outfit. If you are attending a show in the winter months, there is no need to worry about overheating in your winter coat. Coat checks are available in the lobby areas of Broadway theaters.

You don't have to take our word for it. Here is advice straight from just a few of the shows themselves:

Dear Evan Hansen: There is no specific dress code. Formal attire is not required.

The Lion King: There is no dress code at the theatre. For all performances, attire should be comfortable and appropriate for the occasion. The theatre is air conditioned throughout the year.

Wicked: There is no specific dress code at the theatre. For all performances, attire should be comfortable and appropriate for the occasion. Please remember the theatre is air conditioned during the summer months; sweaters are recommended.?

Exceptions: Of course, there are few exceptions to these rules. Guests of an opening night of a Broadway show should dress up for the occasion. The same goes for theatre galas and special events (most of which will include a dress code with the invitation). And if you you are lucky enough to score a ticket to the Tony Awards, be prepared to dress up a bit and look your best alongside Broadway's best in formal attire.

Still confused? When in doubt, just put on your Sunday clothes and prove the dress has always been your strongest suit...
