I recently traveled to the land of the lemon trees, Southern Italy's Amalfi Coast. This was truly the trip of a lifetime, spent with great company, my sister and best friend. Packing for summer in Italy was easy, but narrowing down my outfits the greater challenge. If I could do this trip again I would have jammed it all into 1 carry-on bag. We moved around a lot in Italy {Naples to Positano to Ravello to Capri} and one bag is ideal. It is totally doable in summertime because it's very warm so layers are light.
Shorts, sun dresses and sandals that can go from day to night with accessories is the way to go! Comfortable shoes are a must-a versatile sneaker, a slide sandal are pretty much all you need. If your'e dying for a heel, make it a wedge, the streets are brick in some spots and walking in heels is a challenge.
Anything goes in Positano, but if you want to be one with the Italians, casual is the way to go. We went to a few nicer restaurants where people were dressed up more, but for the most part, light linens, maxi dresses with flats and casual outfits are most fitting for this gorgeous beach town. During the daytime a swimsuit with cover-up is totally kosher, most of the daytime activities and restaurants are beachside. Of everything in my suitcase, I'd sit my white denim on the bench for this trip. Next time (I pray I get to return to God's country! ) sub in for a linen culotte instead. My favorite Positano outfit was a white linen maxi dress. It blended in with what most were wearing but has fun little details to make is special enough for a nice evening out.
If you're not heading to Italy this summer (this sounds so funny, like it's part of my normal travel routine, ha!), these easy summer outfits will work perfectly for any warm weather beach vacay!
In general day-to-day European style is more dressy than American style, but this does not mean business clothing. A nice blouse and well-tailored denim is a timeless uniform that can work in Italy just as well as any other part of Europe.
Italians are partial to clothing that is nicely fitted. So skip the slouchy shirt or baggy jeans. Italians do wear jeans though, but they would pair them with a dressy top.
- no oversized shirts or baggy trousers. Italians always wear appropriately sized clothing (younger Italians even like to dress slightly smaller than their actual size). - no fanny packs or belt packs. - no over-sized T-shirts, especially not those with big, flashy pictures on them.
Also, apparently, some cathedrals will not let you enter wearing shorts. I am here to tell you, that this is incorrect. You can wear shorts in Italy and look perfectly normal.
It is improper to put one's hands on one's lap, or to stretch one's arms while at the table. Resting one's elbows on the table is also considered to be poor manners. Do not leave the table until everyone has finished eating. Drinking beverages other than water or wine with a meal is quite uncommon.
What is this? In Italy, we do not wear sneakers in the office but we do wear them if we travel, if we are sightseeing and in any informal situation. Do not go for a less comfortable shoe out of this misconception, sneakers are perfect for Italy (see below for tips on stylish ones).
