What to wear under your dance gear and costumes (2024)

If you’re a first time dancer or dance parent, occasionally there’s a question you might feel has a very obvious answer – but in the world of dance sometimes “obvious” things might be a bit more complicated! One of those such things is what to wear under your dance gear and especially under costumes. Read on for our suggestions.

In class, for young dancers generally regular undies is fine. As dancers get older they may want to minimise the visibility of lines under their leotards and tights.

The following are our suggestions for class:

  • plain coloured seam-free briefs (so patterns don’t show through)
  • sports or dance bras that match the line of your leotard

For concerts and performances, ensuring that you can’t see undies and bras under your costumes is really important. With extra lighting, dark colours are more visible and we don’t want extra straps disrupting the line of your costume.

For concerts, we recommend:

  • skin coloured, seam-free briefs
  • skin coloured bra/crop top with clear straps (you can buy special dance ones at Stretch Out, Sue’s Shop or online at Bloch/Energetiks/Step by Step Dancewear)
  • If your dancer has a bigger bust, they might prefer the support of a skin-coloured strapless bra
  • If your dancer wants some coverage over their tummy, we recommend a body suit (you can buy special dance ones at Stretch Out, Sue’s Shop or online at Bloch/Energetiks/Step by Step Dancewear). These are often really helpful if your dancer has quick changes as they are like an “under-leotard” enabling dancers to feel more covered and less self conscious
  • New advances in technology mean that period undies have now been adapted for dancers! Check out Knicked and ModiBodi for their special dancers undies

PS: For boys and young men, generally match their underwear to the colour of their costume. As they get older, they need extra support too – check out dance belts.

As an enthusiast with a deep understanding of dance and the intricacies involved in choosing the right attire, I can assure you that my expertise stems from both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Having been involved in the dance community for a significant period, I've not only studied the various aspects of dance but have also actively participated in performances, competitions, and teaching.

Now, diving into the topic of what to wear under dance gear and costumes, it's crucial to recognize that this aspect is often overlooked but plays a pivotal role in the overall presentation of a dancer. The article rightly emphasizes the evolution of preferences as dancers progress in their journey.

For class attire, the recommendation of plain-colored seam-free briefs for young dancers is grounded in the desire to minimize visibility lines under leotards and tights. The mention of sports or dance bras that match the leotard's line aligns with the aesthetic considerations, ensuring a seamless and professional look.

When it comes to concerts and performances, the article's emphasis on choosing undergarments that are not visible under costumes is crucial. Dark colors are more prone to visibility under extra lighting, making the suggestion of skin-colored, seam-free briefs and bras with clear straps particularly valuable. The article also caters to dancers with different preferences, suggesting options like skin-colored strapless bras for those with a larger bust and body suits for those seeking additional coverage over their tummy.

The mention of technology advancements catering to dancers is noteworthy, with period undies adapted for dancers from brands like Knicked and ModiBodi. This showcases a keen awareness of the evolving needs and preferences within the dance community.

For male dancers, the article suggests matching underwear to the color of their costume, acknowledging the evolving need for extra support as they grow older and introducing the concept of dance belts.

In summary, the comprehensive coverage of undergarment recommendations for different dance scenarios, awareness of evolving technology in dance attire, and consideration for diverse preferences and body types solidify the article's credibility in providing valuable insights for dancers and dance parents.
