Well, a never before seen picture from Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra’s wedding has emerged in which the groom appears to be doing just that. The garter, which was usually used for holding up stockings or socks, became symbolic in Western weddings and it also became traditional for the brides to wear them to their weddings. In the Middle Ages, the groomsmen would be the ones removing the garter, but in the modern day, it is reserved only for the groom. Priyanka and Nick are definitely keeping up with tradition.
A little bit more about the garter, the tradition is believed to have emerged from a superstition that taking an article of the bride’s clothing will bring good luck. Now it is mostly about removing the garter and tossing it to the unmarried male guests, with the one catching it said to be the next in line for marriage.
