Where Can I Buy 1lb Loaf Tins? - Food Cheats (1)Looking for a small, 1lb loaf tin, to fit into a smaller slow cooker? These fit my 3.5 litre oval slow cooker a treat!

Sizes might vary a little, but they will hold the same volume – and I recently needed to know the size of a 1lb loaf tin because I’ve been looking to buy one for some time as my full-sized tins won’t fit inside my slow cooker and they’re over-sized for what I’d be baking in my mini oven. So I needed to work out 1lb loaf tin sizes so I could carry a note with me in case I saw any in the shops. In the end, I was “saved” when I saw some loaf tins for sale that were clearly labelled “1lb loaf tin” at Aldi, so I bought them! I took a chance, as I didn’t have my note with me today as I hadn’t expected to spot them in Aldi! but at just £1.99 for two this was a good price and they looked “small enough to do the job and be useful” so it was worth the risk.

Foil Takeaway Containers: I’ve been “making do” with foil takeaway containers, which are good enough and they fit inside my 3.5 litre slow cooker, but it was annoying that I didn’t just have a small loaf tin in the cupboard. Well, now I have two! I’m glad it was a twin-pack as just having one would’ve annoyed me probably if I wanted to bake two items at the same time that were slightly different flavours. Most recipes will state that you need a loaf tin based on the weight of what you’re baking, which isn’t helpful if you aren’t cooking full-sized portions or want to use it for other purposes. In short, all I wanted was a small loaf tin that would fit inside my 3.5 litre slow cooker and also fit inside my mini oven. Where Can I Buy 1lb Loaf Tins? - Food Cheats (2) One of these loaf tins fits nicely inside my slow cooker – and the mini oven accommodates both tins at the same time, in side-by-side formation, or back-and-front – with room to spare, which is handy for moving them about or getting them out!

When you’re looking for a 1lb loaf tin, you might find they’re described as a 450 gram loaf size. Each manufacturer will make them slightly different, and most will give you the EXTERNAL measurements, which includes the edges and lip area – which isn’t very helpful. Generally a 1lb loaf tin might be advertised with (external) measurements of about:

  • 6.5cm deep
  • 18-21cm long
  • 10-11cm wide.

Volume: When you calculate the volume, you’ll typically have a loaf tin with a volume of approximately 1400 cm externally – but those measurements include the sides and the lip edges. A 1lb loaf tin will hold approximately 600ml of liquid to the top, so to test the size of your existing pans fill one with water and then pour that into a measuring jug:

  • If it holds about 600ml of water it’s a 1lb loaf tin
  • If it holds about 1.2ml of water then you have a 2lb loaf tin.

That’s the total capacity, to the rim, so you’re looking at a loaf tin that will hold under this amount of your mix safely, with room to expand and grow.

Crofton 1lb Loaf Tins

These are oven safe up to 230°C/450°C/Gas Mark 8 – which is more than plenty, quite a few will only declare themselves safe up to 200°C. I don’t use the oven over 200°C as a rule, so 230°C is plenty of leeway. They are also dishwasher safe, although I do all my washing up by hand as I don’t have a dishwasher! Prices vary from the budget busting £1.99 for two I found, to £9 for a Mary Berry 1lb loaf tin from Lakeland – and even higher if you want a professional quality loaf tin. For most people, you probably just want an occasional loaf tin that’s small, so cheaper will fit the bill. If you do find out it’s handy, then you can always look for a better quality one in a few years’ time once it’s proven itself as useful! Although you can find 1lb loaf tins advertised on most supermarket websites and shops like Wilko, you might struggle to find them actually in-store, so it’s sometimes just something you’ll find easiest to buy online if you’ve not the patience to wait for months until you stumble across one (my preferred shopping behaviour). I just add things to my little notepad of “things I’m always looking out for”, which usually lurks in my main/large shopping bag, just in case.

I plan to use this loaf tin to make small loaves of bread, banana bread, small cakes and I could really have done with them at Christmas when I made a nut roast and didn’t have a tin “the right size and shape” at the time, so had to improvise. This loaf tin will be the perfect shape/size for when I make kebab meat too, or cheese and potato pie. I’ll also use it as a regular baking dish, when what I’m cooking just happens to fit into it. I’m not overly fussed about only using one dish for the purpose the label suggested! It’s an oven proof dish, that fits in the slow cooker and my mini oven – therefore it’ll get all manner of uses.

If you’re a user of Amazon UK, why not look through their 1lb loaf tin listings and give your slow cooker a quick measure, find the ideal container that fits while you still remember!: Amazon UK Loaf Tins, 1lb
