Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (2024)

Being a popular tourist destination, Bangkok is packed with hotels and places to stay at all budgets. It can, however, be a bit overwhelming to choose where to stay in Bangkok, as there are so many accommodation options available.

Having spent a lot of time in Bangkok, we have put together this guide to our favorite Bangkok areas and accommodations. Each city area is different, and as a traveler, each has its pros and cons. Where you should stay in Bangkok depends on what you want to get out of your Bangkok visit.

With a population of more than 8 million people, covering 1600 square kilometers, Bangkok is one of Southeast Asia’s biggest and most vibrant cities. It is our favorite city in the world, and we consider it our “home away from home” as we have been there a lot over the years and lived there for months at a time.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (1)

What we love most about Bangkok are its energy, its lovely and friendly people, and its delicious and healthy food.

The “City of Angels” has it all, from high-class shopping to cool markets, spectacular ancient monuments and temples, and everything from top-notch dining to street food. There is never a dull moment when you hit the streets of Bangkok.

Bangkok has an excellent, cheap, and easy-to-use public transportation system, which makes it easy to get around – Skytrain, Subway MRT, river ferries, and buses. Grabbing a taxi, ordering a Grab (Thailand’s answer to Uber), or tuk-tuk is also very easy as they are everywhere, eager to drive you around.

Where To Stay In Bangkok

Whenever we travel, we do a lot of research trying to find the “perfect” accommodation. For Bangkok, we have done particularly thorough research as we have been here lots of times over the last few years and for weeks and months at a time.

For us, the perfect accommodation has big enough rooms to store all our luggage and still have some space to walk around. We like big comfortable beds so that we can sleep soundly at night, quiet with no noise from the traffic outside or the party downstairs, a well-equipped gym, and a swimming pool with sunbeds.

A restaurant with good food is also a plus, as is a central location within walking distance of public transport.

The hotels and guesthouses recommended in this article are mostly places we have stayed in ourselves. To make it as complete and useful a resource as possible, we have also included recommendations from people we know personally and whose opinions we trust.

Updated 2023: We spent four weeks in Bangkok at the beginning of 2023 to update our Bangkok articles, including this guide on where to stay in Bangkok. This guide has been completely updated and reorganized with the most current information, including updated area descriptions and hotel recommendations.

Important: None of the hotels recommended here are paid placements or have sponsored our stay in any way. We have paid for these accommodations ourselves. If you book through any of our links, we make a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps keep our site running – so thank you in advance for your support!

We hope you find this guide helpful in finding the best place to stay in Bangkok. ♥

The following eight areas are the best areas to stay in Bangkok:

Why Stay In The Khao San Area?

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (3)

If you have read the book “The Beach” or seen the movie, then you have heard of Khao San Road. The book sums up this area pretty well: “Khao San is the center of the backpacking universe.”

Khao San is the most famous street in Bangkok, and anyone backpacking through SE Asia will come through here at one time or another. We stayed in this area on our first trip ever to Bangkok, back in 2005, and we loved it at the time.

If you are in Bangkok to party, Khao San is the place to be! Here you will find “happy hour” both day and night. Even if you don’t choose to stay in this area, it is still a fun place to visit. Have a cold Chang beer at one of the many street pubs and watch the craziness.

You will find cheap Thai street food and markets selling affordable and trendy clothes, shoes, and accessories on the busy streets in and around Khao San Road. This is also a popular area among young Thais who come here in the evenings, especially during weekends, to enjoy the market atmosphere and nightlife.

Most of the people staying around Khao San Road are young backpackers on limited budgets. You won’t find many five stars hotels here, but there are plenty of budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (4)

However, the backpacking hub around Khao San and its surrounding streets is just a small part of the much larger Banglamphu area stretching almost to the Royal Palace.

Banglamphu is an old part of town, and you do not need to walk far from Khao San before you are surrounded by traditional shophouses, local homes, temples, and restaurants that have been here for generations. Banglamphu’s close vicinity to Bangkok’s most prominent attractions has kept development at bay, and the area is still refreshingly free of modern malls and skyscrapers. Some of the old shophouses have recently been converted into neat boutique guesthouses, hotels, and cozy cafes.

Things To See And Do In Khao San Area

  • Khao San Road
Or Thanon Khao San, as it is called in Thai. Experience the legendary and lively Khao San Road with its bars, restaurants, street market, and backpacker vibe. Great fun!
  • Democracy Monument
Enjoy the world-class street food and tasty Thai dessert sold by the street vendors around theDemocracy Monument.
  • Golden Mount Temple
Golden Mountor Wat Saket is a beautiful Buddhist temple that sits on top of the Golden Mountain (Phu Khao Thong). A magnificent temple from which to enjoy the sunset.
  • Giant Swing
The city’s iconic Giant Swing is over 21 meters high and painted blood red. Constructed in 1784 by King Rama I, only two years after the establishment of Bangkok as the new capital.
  • Jay Fai Restaurant
Try Michelin-star street food – Legendary Thai chef Jay Fai is still stirring the pots even in her mid-seventies at Raan Jay Fai, Bangkok’s only Michelin-star street food restaurant. The crab omelet deserves its Michelin star status and hefty price tag, but unless you have a reservation, expect very long lines.
  • Bangkok National Museum
Explore Bangkok’s largest museum, Bangkok National Museum, and learn about Thailand’s proud history.
  • River ferry
Take the riverboat like a local and jump off a few stops down the river to explore the Grand Palace and the famous Bangkok temples.

What’s The Catch?

Khao San Road is crowded, busy, noisy, and packed with people in the evenings and at night. The loud music from the bars along Khao San can make it difficult to get any sleep at night, and I would recommend staying on one of the side streets to Khao San Road and not on Khao San itself.

The Khao San/ Banglamphu area does not have a Skytrain or Subway MRT, so the best way to get to/ from Khao San Road is by ferry (walking distance to the river), taxi, Grab car, bus, or by one of Bangkok’s iconic Tuk-Tuks (three-wheeled taxis).

Top End

Riva Surya Bangkok
One of the few higher-end hotels in this area, the Riva Surya is located on the riverbank about five minutes walk away from the famous Khao San Road.

We booked a Standard Double Room with City View and Balcony (32 sqm). We were initially slightly disappointed when we arrived and discovered that we had booked a room facing the street, not the river. The room itself was great, spacious, elegant, and comfortable. But I think it’s worth upgrading to a river-facing room for the spectacular views of the Chao Praya River.

There is a lovely pool area with plenty of sunbeds, and breakfast is served on the balcony overlooking the river.

If you’re looking for a bit of luxury yet still want to experience the youthful vibe of Bangkok’s backpacking hub, then this is an excellent choice. The nearby river ferry station Phra Arthit (a 3-minute walk) means you can easily take the ferry down to the old town attractions such as the Royal Palace.

Mid-Range

Casa Vimaya Riverside
Casa Vimaya is located only a short five-minute walk away from Khao San Road. Yet, it is in a quiet street, perfect for a good night’s sleep.

We booked a Superior King Room, which was 25 sqm. Our room was fairly large, clean, comfortable, and furnished with a colonial-style era decor. All rooms have air-con, a private bathroom, and a big flat-screen TV. Our room was on the ground floor and didn’t have much of a view, so consider choosing a Riverview deluxe room if you’d like a better view.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (8)

We especially enjoyed the rooftop pool and bar, and we had it almost to ourselves most days. The staff was kind and welcoming.

The hotel is in a perfect location: Khao San Road is only a five-minute walk away, and the Phra Arthit River ferry station is close by (about an 8-minute walk), making it easy to reach the major sights and temples. Overall, we found Casa Vimaya Riverside to be an excellent value for the money!

Old Capital Bike Inn
The Old Capital Bike Inn used to be an old heritage home but has been completely renovated and turned into one of Bangkok’s most charming boutique hotels. The ten rooms are all unique and feature classic Thai teak furniture and wall art, illustrating aspects of life in old Bangkok.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (9)

The interior design and decor may be classic Thai, but modern-day comforts such as flat-screen TV, air-con, and free wifi are tastefully integrated.

This is a family-run hotel and has been in the same family for more than a century, ever since the time of King Rama V. It used to be called the Old Bangkok Inn, but when they decided to include their love of old vintage bikes into the design of the hotel, they renamed it. The classic bikes on display are not just for show either, you can borrow one to explore the area, or you can join the staff on a free guided evening bike tour.

A cozy little cafe in the lobby serves small meals and a good selection of tea and coffee. They even have some tasty vegan Thai food options. We particularly loved the delicious Belgian waffles.

You can walk to Khao San Road in about 15 minutes and explore temples such as the Golden Mount / Wat Saket, just a five minutes walk away.

Casa Nithra Bangkok
Located a short walk away from Khao San Road, the Casa Nithra is one of the best mid-range alternatives in this part of town. Villa De Khaosan by Chillax
Villa De Khaosan is a boutique hotel with a great location if you want to stay close to Khao San yet value your beauty sleep. Just a couple of minutes walk away from the action, it is surprisingly quiet. The hotel’s design is inspired by French 17th-century style, and the rooms are relatively spacious, very clean, comfortable, and equipped with flat-screen TV (including Netflix), air-con, and free Wi-fi. There is a gorgeous rooftop pool and bar with a fantastic city view.

The Bhuthorn Bed and Breakfast
For something a little out of the ordinary, how about a homestay at The Bhuthorn? With only three rooms, this renovated hundred-year-old shophouse provides a unique accommodation opportunity in the middle of old town Bangkok.

Budget

Thanabhumi
Located in a quiet neighborhood with views of the river, this guesthouse is one of the absolute best budget options in the Khao San area. Private rooms are large and, while fairly basic, nicely furnished and very clean with attached bathrooms. There is a lounge for hanging out and socializing, with free coffee and snacks available! The owner is lovely and super helpful. Wifi is free and available everywhere. You can walk to Khao San Road in less than 10 minutes or to the Royal Palace in about 15-20 minutes. Excellent value for the money.

NapPark Hostel
Located very close, but not too close to the craziness that is Khao San Road, this is a great place to meet people and socialize. With a spacious communal area, friendly staff, and social vibe, there is no wonder NapPark Hostel keeps popping up whenever someone recommends a hostel in the Khao San area. The dorm rooms are kept tidy, and the beds are comfortable. NapPark is the place to go if you want to socialize, get to know other young travelers, and don´t mind a little noise.

2. Bangkok Riverside

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (10)

Why Stay By The Bangkok Riverside?

Bangkok’s riverside is beautiful and very scenic, especially after dark, with its glittering temples, shrines, and Bangkok’s most popular attraction, the Royal Palace.

Here along the Chao Praya River, Chinese immigrants founded the first settlements of what would become the capital of Thailand. If you are looking for top-end accommodation, this is where you’ll find most of the top 5-star hotels in Bangkok.

There are also a few small unique boutique hotels here where the old traditional houses lining the river have been transformed into charming guesthouses.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (11)

We have stayed in Bangkok’s riverside neighborhood many times, and we love taking the ferries up and down the river, jumping off along the way to see the many iconic landmarks that Bangkok is famous for, such as the Grand Palace and the iconic temples Wat Pho, and Wat Arun.

Taking the ferry boat with local Thais is an excellent way to catch a glimpse of everyday life in Bangkok. Even if you do not choose to stay here, Bangkok`s riverside is a must-visit!

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (12)

Things To See And Do In The Bangkok Riverside Area

  • Wat Arun/ Temple Of The Dawn
Temple of the Dawn (Wat Arun) is one of our favorite temples, with its unique tower colorfully decorated in porcelain tiles. It is most beautiful in the morning when the sun reflects off the surface or in the evening when it is illuminated.
  • Royal Grand Palace
The majestic Grand Palace is the former residence of the King of Thailand. This is Bangkok’s most famous landmark and one of the must-see sights in Bangkok.
  • Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo)
This beautiful temple lies within the Royal Place grounds and is famous for its Buddha statue made of jade.
  • Gigantic Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho)
The 16m tall reclining golden Buddha and the beautiful temple never fail to impress. A tip is to come in the evening, there will be fewer people, and you can stay and enjoy the temple after sunset.
  • Flower Market (Pak Klong Talat)
The Flower Market (Pak Klong Talat) is an enormous market selling flowers, fresh fruits, and vegetables.
  • Asiatique
Asiatique Marketis partly an amusem*nt park and partly an outdoor mall and market with many shops and several great restaurants. A visit to Asiatique is a fun way to spend an evening.
  • Dinner Cruise
Dinner cruise on the Chao Praya riveris a popular and great way to spend an evening gliding along the mighty Chao Praya river while enjoying a delicious dinner.
  • Take a ferry or hire a longboat
Explore the Chao Phraya river by jumping on one of the frequently running river ferries, or hire a private longboat to take you into the side channels to catch a glimpse of everyday life by the river.
  • Icon Siam
Icon Siam is the newest and flashiest of Bangkok malls. It’s the home to Thailand’s first official Apple store, hundreds of shops and restaurants, a vast food court modeled after a floating market, a two-floor arts & crafts department, and a large cinema complex including an IMAX screen. A free shuttle ferry runs from the Central Pier and the River City Mall.
  • The Sixth Thai Restaurant
The Sixth – Have lunch at one of our favorite Thai restaurants.

What`s The Catch?

The riverside of Bangkok is a little more expensive than other areas of Bangkok, both when it comes to hotels and restaurants. There is only one Skytrain station, Saphan Taksin, and

From Saphan Taksin, you are a short walk away from Central Pier (3 min), where you can take the riverboats and ferries up the river. Many of the hotels have free shuttle boats that transport guests to and from Central Pier. You can also take the free ferry to Asiatique and Icon Siam from Central Pier.

Mandarin Oriental Bangkok
The Grande Dame of Bangkok’s luxury hotels and the hotel we will stay at when we win the lottery one day. If you are looking for that once-in-a-lifetime hotel experience in absolute old-world luxury, the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok will not disappoint. As the first luxury hotel in Thailand, it has hosted royalty, presidents, and literary legends such as Joseph Conrad and Noël Coward.

Mandarin Oriental is the perfect hotel for honeymoons and special occasions. Their customer service is legendary, and they treat you like royalty from the moment you set foot in the lobby. Some highlights include no less than 9 fabulous restaurants, two outdoor pools, a fitness center, tennis courts, a spa and wellness center, and a location right on the riverbank with stunning views.

AVANI Riverside Bangkok Hotel
One of our absolute favorite hotels in Bangkok is this riverside hotel. We keep coming back to this hotel over and over again as it is simply excellent and has it all.

The Avani Riverside is a more affordable alternative to the classic luxury riverside Bangkok hotels that, in many ways, rival its more expensive competitors. All rooms face the river, and the view of the Bangkok riverside is just spectacular!

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (13)

Swimming in the stunning infinity pool on the 26th floor overlooking the beautiful Chao Phraya River and the Bangkok skyline is an unforgettable experience (especially at sunrise and sunset).

With several in-house restaurants and a sky bar on the 27th floor, there is plenty of choice for dining in should you want a break from exploring the city. The standout is the SEEN Restaurant & Bar, a Portuguese-Brazilian restaurant that opened in 2019. SEEN has since established itself as one of Bangkok’s best rooftop bars and restaurants.

The rooms are large and modern, with super comfortable beds and a fantastic view of the Chao Praya River and Bangkok’s skyline. The service is excellent, and the breakfast buffet has plenty of options.

There is a mall at the base of the hotel building with shops and restaurants, which is very convenient. The free hotel river ferry leaves every 20 minutes and will take you straight to the Central Ferry Pier and the Saphan Taksin Skytrain Station in about 10 minutes, from where you can easily get around Bangkok by Skytrain or Metro. You can’t go wrong by booking this hotel.

Inn A Day Boutique Hotel
Inn A Day is a unique boutique hotel with one of the best locations in the city! Right by the Choa Praya riverside with breathtaking views of the river and with the stunning Wat Arun temple right across. Major attractions like the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and the National Museum are all within walking distance.

The building has been in the family for generations and was formerly a sugar warehouse. Now it has been transformed into one of Bangkok’s coolest boutique hotels blending its industrial roots with cozy details and furnishing. The style is shabby chic and industrial, with elements from the old warehouse incorporated into the hotel’s design.

Inn A Day has eleven rooms in total. We booked and stayed two nights in the Deluxe Double Room with River View (03.00 PM), which was 24 sqm with a King bed.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (14)

We loved the comfortable beds and the wonderful view from our room, and the breakfast was also very good. It’s an old house, and you can hear the sounds from the river and the boats that go by, but we soon got used to it and slept very well.

All rooms have air-con, a flat-screen TV, and free Wifi, but they vary in design and size, so study the room options before booking. The larger, more expensive rooms have private balconies, a river view, and a deep wooden bathtub.

Each floor of the old four-story building is named after the three-time zones – dawn, day, and dusk. Instead of room numbers, the rooms have a time (like 02 PM or 07 AM). The rooms have a physical clock above the door showing which room it is. Very original! 🙂

The room design also uses colors that represent the time of day. Blue for dawn, yellow for daytime, and orange for dusk. Since we stayed in room 03.00 PM, it had yellow elements (like a yellow door and yellow shower cubicle).

It’s a family-run hotel, and the son handles most of the day-to-day business. He’s super friendly, speaks perfect English, and helped us with everything. The hotel restaurant is well known for its good Thai food, and there are also several other restaurants in the same alley as the hotel. Be aware that there is no elevator, but the staff will insist on carrying your luggage. They also have family rooms for up to four people.

Loy La Long Boutique Hotel
This unique boutique hotel is located in an old Chinese Family House and is situated right on the riverbank in Chinatown. This an excellent example of how the community is giving new life to these old houses. They have kept the old wooden structures but refurnished them with modern comforts and a restaurant serving tasty Thai food. The balconies face the river and are a great place to sit, have a drink, and watch the boats go by (as we are doing in the photo below).

Each of the seven rooms is unique and charming, painted in its own color (green room, black room, red room, and so on). All rooms come with all modern amenities such as air-con, a smart tv (with Netflix), complimentary Wi-fi, and a refrigerator. If you are looking for something truly unique, this small seven-room Bangkok boutique hotel with its friendly staff comes highly recommended. Breakfast is included.

Siamotif Boutique Hotel
The Siamotif Boutique Hotel is another rare gem for anyone seeking a unique, charming, and authentic stay in a family-owned traditional wooden Thai house. Set by a side canal of the Chao Praya River, the property has been in the family since King Rama V, and the main house is over a hundred years old.

The six rooms are all unique, named after their color and wall murals: Golden Crane, Flowery, New Porcelain, Celadon, Motif, and New Charcoal. They have been beautifully refurbished and decorated by local artists and artisans and modernized with private bathrooms, air-con, free wifi, and a flat-screen TV. Breakfast is included.

The rooms differ in color, size, and design, so choose the one you like. We booked and stayed two nights in the red Flowery Room (a double room with a balcony, 24 sqm in size).

Despite being a little out of the way, it is well-connected with the closest Skytrain station (Krung Thonburi), just a five-minute walk away. The Central river station is one stop on the Skytrain, and the huge IconSiam shopping mall is also within walking distance.

3. Sukhumvit Area

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (18)

Why Stay In The Sukhumvit Area?

Sukhumvit, one of Bangkok’s most modern and cosmopolitan neighborhoods, is located in the central part of Bangkok along Sukhumvit Road.

We have stayed here many times and love this area! It is a very convenient neighborhood to stay in with public transport (Skytrain and MRT), great shopping, modern supermarkets, and lots of different and excellent dining options.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (19)

Sukhumvit is popular among ex-pats and Westerners living in Bangkok, and you will find restaurants from all over the world here. We love that we can eat a great falafel at a Middle Eastern restaurant one day, have some real Italian pizza, a tender Australian steak, or a juicy American hamburger the next day, and some delicious Thai street food in between.

Sukhumvit is arguably the best area to stay in Bangkok for nightlife and has it all when it comes to dining and clubbing! Much of the action centers around Soi 11, Bangkok’s famous party street, a favorite with both ex-pats and visitors, with its extensive selections of restaurants, clubs, and bars.

As for accommodations inthis area, there are plenty of excellent Sukhumvit hotels available at any price range.

One of the main draws of this area is how well connected it is by public transportation since the Skytrain (BTS) runs along Sukhumvit Road, and the Subway (MRT) line crosses it.

Things To See And Do In Sukhumvit Area

Sukhumvit lacks traditional tourist attractions, but it makes up for it by offering some of Bangkok’s best luxury hotels, fashionable shopping malls, spas, restaurants, hip clubs, and cool bars.

  • Shopping
It seems that every few hundred meters along Sukhumvit Road, there is a shopping mall. Some of the most notable malls are Terminal 21 with its city-themed floors, Central Chidlom, Emporium, Emquartier, and the ultra-posh Central Embassy mall with its large open bookstore/food court on the top floor. See our guide to shopping in Bangkok for more.
  • Nightlife
There is no shortage of nightlife options along the side streets along Sukhumvit. Most famous is Soi 11 (soi means small street in the Thai language), with its many bars and restaurants. Trendy Soi 55 (Tong Lo Road) has many clubs popular with young Thais. Some of our personal favorites include the Octave Rooftop Bar & Lounge,WTF Gallery and Café, and 72 Courtyardwith the Beam nightclub, chill terrace, and an excellent selection of wines.
  • Restaurants
Sukhumvit´s popularity with ex-pats means that you can find just about any cuisine here. Whether you are in the mood for Italian pasta, Indian curry, German sausages, Argentinian beef, Irish pub meal, Japanese Sushi, or an American hamburger, they are all here.
  • The Commons
The Commons is one of the hippest places in Sukhumvit at the moment. It is a hub of restaurants, cafes, bars, and a Yoga studio, hang-out, and concert arena. Such a cool place!
  • Benjakitti Park/ Benchakitti Park
Bangkok’s largest park is the closest green lung to Sukhumvit. Its newly expanded Forrest Park section is truly spectacular and an excellent place for an afternoon walk.
Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (20)

What`s The Catch?

Some streets in Sukhumvit have a loud nightlife with go-go bars, pole dancing, and sexy shows, especially around the red-light district Nana (the street Soi Nana 4) and Soi Cowboy (off the street Soi 23). These streets are easily avoided, and Sukhumvit is otherwise a family-friendly area.

The area is very urban, with few green lungs and parks. Traffic along the quite narrow Sukhumvit road can create some epic traffic congestion, especially during rush hours, so your best bet is to use the Skytrain and MRT lines to get around.

Sukhumvit lacks traditional tourist attractions, but it is easy to get to the top tourist attractions in Bangkok from this area.

Okura Prestige Bangkok
A large 5-star modern luxury hotel and a trendy choice in the Sukhumvit area. It is part of the Okura chain of luxury hotels, and the hotel’s Japanese heritage has inspired its interior design, attention to detail, and excellent service. The 240 rooms are spacious, modern, and elegant, with everything you need whether you’re in Bangkok for business or a holiday.

We booked and stayed in a Deluxe Twin Room, which was 43 sqm and had a fantastic city view. Loved the lounge sofa by the huge window and the working desk.

There is a large well-equipped fitness room, and the heated infinity pool on the 35th floor is simply fantastic! We loved that it was open until 10 p.m, which meant we could go for a late-night swim and admire the view of the city lights at night. The spa is said to be lovely too, but we did not get to try it.

The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel
This is one of the grand old dames of Bangkok hotels. Originally built 20 years ago but refurbished a few years back, it has retained the old-world luxury of grand staircases, marble foyers, and grand ballrooms. It is the sort of hotel where people still dress up for dinner, and the doorman never fails to open the door for you.

We booked and stayed in an “Athenee, Guest room, 1 King, City view” room. Our room (room no. 1112) on the 11th floor was big (38 sqm), kept in a classic Thai colonial style, elegantly furnished, comfortable, and upgraded with a very large screen TV. We also liked that the wifi was free and fast. The bathtub was especially nice.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (25)

We particularly loved the pool on the 4th floor, which is huge and set in a green tropical garden with plenty of sunbeds. There is an excellent 24-hour fitness center. The hotel has a perfect location on Wireless Road, in the heart of Bangkok’s embassy neighborhood, less than a five-minute walk to the nearest Skytrain station (Ploen Chit). It is one of our favorite locations in Bangkok since, in addition to easy access to the Skytrain and the restaurants of Sukhumvit, you can also walk to Lumpini Park in about 10 minutes. We found the breakfast to be excellent!

Ascott Thonglor
We ended up at Ascott Thonglor a little by accident when Maria’s brother and his family were in Bangkok for a few days, and we wanted to stay close to where they were living. The Thong Lor area is very popular with ex-pats and has some excellent restaurants and nightlife, but it’s a little less central than we normally like to stay.

However, Ascott Thonglor turned out to be a fantastic hotel, and having the Skytrain Station just a few minutes walk away made it very easy to get around town.

We booked and stayed in a Deluxe King Room, which was 35 sqm.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (26)

Our room was large (35 sqm), modern, and stylishly decorated with a super comfortable bed, large flat screen tv, a sitting area, and a full-size work desk. The large windows provide a great view of Bangkok’s skyline (especially after dark). The bathroom was equally spacious and had a separate bathtub and shower area. Maria loved the bath salt and the fluffy bathrobes.

The swimming pool is gorgeous and large enough to swim laps in. There are plenty of sunbeds for those who prefer shade and some very comfortable sofas for us sun-worshippers. Btw, the sun conditions are excellent, with sun all day into the late afternoon.

We had Maria’s little nephew over (he’s two years old), and he absolutely loved the kid’s playroom, which had a lot of toys! There is also a well-equipped fitness center.

Overall, we were very impressed with Ascott Thonglor. Everything from the rooms, the facilities, and the friendly service was truly five-star worthy!

137 Pillars Residences (Apartments)
If you’re looking for a cozy high-end apartment in central Bangkok, then 137 Pillars Residences may be just the ticket. These light and airy classic-styled apartments include a large bedroom, a separate living area, a kitchen including a washer/ dryer, and a small balcony.

We stayed in room 708 on the 7th floor, a The Pillar Studio Residences apartment (45 sqm). There are also one- and two-bedroom apartments available.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (29)

We only stayed for two nights, but wish we could have stayed longer. The bed was super comfortable, and it was fantastic having a small balcony to eat lunch while enjoying the views. Our only minor complaint (and it’s very minor) would be that the bathtub showerhead hung very low on the wall, which is not ideal for tall people like us.

The infinity pool on the 27th floor is spectacular! It’s huge and with gorgeous views across Bangkok’s skyline. There is also a pool bar, a jacuzzi, and plenty of sunbeds. On the flip side, we found the water to be quite cold, and the pool doesn’t see much sun in the afternoon.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (32)

There is actually a second, even more, spectacular pool with a 360-degree view of Bangkok on the rooftop. It’s quite Instagram-famous, but it’s reserved for guests staying at 137 Pillars Suites.

Location-wise, Phrom Phong BTS station is about 10 minute walk away. There is a really great Tops Supermarket within easy walking distance, and the area has lots of restaurants.

Carlton Hotel Bangkok
Carlton is a relatively new hotel that exceeded our expectations. So much so that we extended our stay by an extra few days!

Our spacious, stylish room (37 sqm Deluxe Room) included a full-sized desk for working, a huge flat-screen TV, and very comfortable beds. The bathroom had a separate shower, a bathtub, and a Japanese-style toilet (I love those!)

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (34)

On the 10th floor is the swimming pool, one of the largest pools I’ve seen at any Bangkok hotel! It is surrounded by plenty of sunbeds and isopen late (10 pm), which is rare and very cool since we love a late-night swim. There is a dedicated kid’s pool, a seating area, and a pool bar. You’ll also find a well-equipped fitness center, a sauna, and a spa on the same floor.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (35)

In the lobby, there is a cafe/bakery that makes fantastic bread and cakes. After 7 pm, it’s half price off, so many evenings we couldn’t resist stopping by and bringing some cakes with us up to the room. There is also a very cool rooftop bar on the 33rd floor.

The hotel is centrally located along Sukhumvit Road, with many restaurants nearby. Terminal 21 Mall, Benjakitti Park, Skytrain, and MRT stations are all within easy walking distance.

Our apartment was the Studio Executive, which is a studio apartment with a kitchenette. The kitchenette was well equipped with cooking utensils, a washing machine, and a full-sized fridge. Everything was new, clean, and fresh. With comfortable beds, a huge flat-screen tv, and a bathtub to soak in, we could easily have stayed here long-term.

4. Silom Area

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (41)

Why Stay In Silom Area?

Silom is considered Bangkok´s business district and is one of the best areas to stay in Bangkok. Here you find Bangkok’s largest and most beautiful green park – Lumphini Park, great shopping, as well as excellent restaurants with delicious and authentic Thai food.

It is easy to get to/from this area as it has several Skytrain and Subway (MRT) stations, making it an excellent base from which to explore the city.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (42)

Silom, along with Bangkok’s Riverside, is our favorite neighborhood to stay in Bangkok.

The perfect Bangkok afternoon starts atLumphini Park. It’s a great place for a walk or a run, and the sight of the many people doing aerobics and Thai Chi is always fun. Followed by a delicious Thai meal at one of our favorite restaurants and topped off with a Mojito drink at the open-air rooftop bar “Vertigo” on the roof of the Banyan Tree Hotel. The views of Bangkok are unbelievable. You feel like you are on top of the world!

Things to see and do in the Silom area

  • Lumphini Park
Go for a walk or run in Lumphini Park, or challenge yourself by joining the free aerobics going on every afternoon here.
  • Patpong Night Market
A popular open-air street market selling most tourist trinkets. It’s a fun and slightly chaotic experience, but the quality of the goods on offer is not particularly impressive, and the prices need some serious bargaining.
  • Patpong
The most famous of Bangkok’s red-light districts.
  • King Power Mahanakhon
Bangkok’s tallest building at 320m has an open-air observation deck, a bar, and a skywalk with a dizzying transparent glass floor.
  • Rooftop Bars
Check out the stunning view of Bangkok from Vertigo`s rooftop open-air bar at Banyan Tree Hotel, or on top of the Lebua State Tower Skybar (made famous by the Hangover 2 movie)
  • Go food exploring along Charoen Krung Road
Bang Rak is an old part of Bangkok and is home to some classic Thai restaurants that have been there for generations.

What`s The Catch?

The streets Patpong 1 and Patpong 2 (Soi 5 and 4) are party-all-night-long with plenty of go-go bars, shows, and pole dancing. Depending on what you want, these streets can be a bit too much and too loud. Thankfully these streets are easily avoided, and the area is otherwise very family-friendly.

Top End

Kimpton Maa-Lai
Kimpton Maa-Lai is one of Bangkok’s newest 5-star luxury hotels, and when we finally were able to stay there in 2022, it instantly became one of our favorite Bangkok hotels!

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (43)

It’s a high-end hotel with world-class service but with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. From the stylish, almost art-gallery-like lobby to the large green garden surrounding the hotel, we immediately felt at home and could have stayed there for weeks. It’s also a pet-friendly hotel, so if you like dogs, you can meet some cute furry friends around.

The rooms are large (we stayed in the smallest, the Essential Room, which was 48 sq. meters!), modern, and beautifully furnished with ultra-comfortable beds and every possible comfort. We loved the large free-standing bathtub, the organic skincare products from Hann, small touches like the complimentary fruit and macarons in our room, and the large floor-to-ceiling windows with spectacular views overlooking the park.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (44)

Waking up in the morning, pushing the button that automatically raised the window blinds, and seeing early morning Bangkok appear was truly spectacular.

The fitness center is one of the best I’ve ever used and easily rivals most commercial gyms, and the pool area is equally impressive. A relaxing oasis with a large swimming pool overlooking the garden and plenty of sunbeds.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (47)

A pleasant surprise was the free wine and drinks served at the pool bar every afternoon between 6-7 pm. Loved it! We did not have an opportunity to try the hotel’s spa, The Amaranth, but it has been nominated for numerous awards.

There are no less than four restaurants and bars, including the coffee bar Craft in the lounge and a sky bar on the 40th floor!

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (48)

The breakfast is one of the best we’ve ever had. The freshly squeezed orange juice, the berry pancakes, and the salmon and poached eggs on avocado toast were the standouts for us.

Location-wise, you’re in arguably the best possible place for exploring Bangkok. Lumphini Park is a quick 10-minute walk away, and you can easily walk to Sukhumvit Road with its Skytrain and MRT stations.

There is a Villa Market supermarket and plenty of restaurants around the corner, a two-minute walk away. You can even use the hotel’s complimentary rental bikes to explore the neighborhood.

To summarize, if it fits your budget and you don’t mind some furry animals around the lobby, then Kimpton Maa-Lai is a fantastic choice!

SO Bangkok
So Bangkok is one of those hotels that may quickly become anyone’s new favorite hotel. It has a few unique features that set it apart from most hotels. Like how you get to choose from different room designs at check-in! The room designs are inspired by one of the five elements- wood, earth, metal, fire, and water. We chose the blue water-themed room, designed by local artists, and it turned out to be fantastic! But all the rooms look stunning.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (50)

We loved our room (a SO Cozy Double Room with City View, 38 sqm) on the 23rd floor with stunning views over Bangkok from the floor-to-ceiling windows, a sitting area, a super comfortable bed, a huge flat-screen TV, and our favorite part, a classic deep bathtub. Some rooms even have views of the park from the bathtub!

Another cool detail is that the minibar is free (!), replenished daily, and surprisingly well-stocked. On the ground floor, there is a chocolatier, and the heavenly smell of fresh chocolate meets you as soon as you enter the lobby. Aside from buying tasty treats, you can even take a course and learn to design your own chocolate creations.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (51)

We fell in love with the swimming pool on the 10th floor, which has a fantastic view of Bangkok and Lumphini Park. There is also a well-equipped fitness center.

Breakfast is excellent, with plenty of options to choose from. The rooftop bar and the restaurant Red Sky 360 have a great reputation, but sadly we did not have time to visit this time.

Lumpini Park is right across the road from the hotel, and you can walk to the nearest MRT station (Lumpini Station) in 3 minutes. The closest Skytrain station (Sala Daeng Station) is about 15 minutes walk away.

We booked a Junior Suite King room (45 sqm) and loved the elegantly decorated apartment with hardwood floors and super comfortable beds. The large bath ensuite has a relaxing bathtub and a walk-in closet. A small but well-equipped kitchen and a seating area with a dining table make this an excellent option for extended stays or if you are traveling with kids.

However, what impressed us the most here was the staff. Rarely have we experienced this level of friendly and attentive service in a Bangkok hotel. From the small complimentary chocolate treats brought to the room to the chilled lemon water served by the pool and the nightly turndown service, it is truly first class.

The hotel has a free shuttle service to the nearest Skytrain station (Phloen Chit Station), or you can easily walk there in less than 10 minutes. Overall, this is one of our absolute favorite Bangkok apartment hotels!

Banyan Tree Bangkok
We have visited the spectacular rooftop bar Moon Bar and some of the great restaurants at Banyan Tree Hotel in Bangkok many times. And we’ve had friends that have stayed at the hotel and raved about it, but it wasn’t until 2022 that we finally got to stay here ourselves. Thankfully it turned out to be worth the wait.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (54)

From the moment the doorman opens the doors and you step into the vast, beautiful hotel lobby, you’ll be in no doubt that this is a high-class 5-star luxury hotel.

We booked and stayed in an Oasis Retreat room (44 sqm). Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated in a classic style; some might say it’s a little old-fashioned. A health club with yoga classes, a fitness center, a sauna, and a beautiful outdoor area with tropical plants, a juice bar, and a pool.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (55)

Location-wise, it is close to Lumphini Park, which is perfect for walking, running, and aerobics. We love this park – the perfect getaway from the busy and urban metropolitan Bangkok. Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse
This is Marriott’s newest hotel in Bangkok, and it instantly became very popular. It is the sort of hotel that ticks all the boxes. We booked and stayed in a Deluxe Room (37 sqm) with a King bed. Our room on the 12th floor was large and comfortable, with everything you would expect from a modern hotel, including a rooftop infinity pool and a sky bar.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (58)

The hotel is, however, not the most unique, exciting, or Thai-esque hotel in Bangkok (aside from the friendly Thai service, that is), but it is a quiet and comfortable place to base yourself.

It is located in the Bang-Rak area, closer to the river than to Lumpini Park, with plenty of restaurants and classic eateries around the neighborhood. The nearest Skytrain station is about 15 minutes walk.

Mid-Range

The Quarter Silom by UHG
Silom has been a little lacking in excellent mid-range hotels, but this relatively new hotel (2020) ticks all the right boxes. Well located down a side street off Silom Road, surrounded by many restaurants, and with Sala Daeng Skytrain and Lumphini MRT stations just a few minutes away, this hotel is an excellent base from which to explore the city.

The rooms are modern, fresh, and elegantly furnished with comfortable beds, free and fast Wi-Fi, and a massive 50″ flat-screen tv with Netflix. There is a well-equipped fitness center and a mid-sized swimming pool, but it’s not on the roof, so it is not ideal for sunbathing. However, you can catch some rays or relax on the rooftop sun terrace. Breakfast is excellent, and Lumphini Park is a five-minute walk away.

PASSA Hotel Bangkok
PASSA Hotel is a new (opened in 2022) 4-star boutique hotel with a stunning design. It is located a five minutes walk from Sala Daeng Skytrain station and MRT stations in the heart of Silom, yet set far enough back from the bustling main road to have a quiet night’s sleep. The hotel’s interior design is modern, and the service is friendly and easygoing. The hotel has 68 rooms in total.

We stayed two nights here, in a Superior King Room (23 sqm) on the 3rd floor. Our room was well-decorated, spotlessly clean, and air-conditioned, with a large flat-screen TV (with Netflix), a huge and very comfortable bed, a mini-bar, and a tea-making kettle. The windows had excellent blinds, so we slept really well. The Deluxe rooms are larger (30 sqm) and have a free-standing deep soaking bathtub. We had no view from our Superior room (room 307), so we regretted not upgrading to a Deluxe room.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (59)

Although the rooftop swimming pool on the 6th floor is small, with only two sun beds and two chairs, it was great for a refreshing dip after a long day of exploring. Our only real complaint is the fitness room, which could really use more equipment.

The hotel does not serve any meals, but the area is packed with restaurants and street food, so there are plenty of excellent choices nearby.

5. Siam Area

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (61)

Why Stay In The Siam Area?

Siam is THE shopping center in Bangkok and has the city’s highest density of shopping malls – MBK, Siam Paragon, Central World, Siam Discovery, Siam Center, and Central Chitlom are all here.

You can easily walk in between these shopping malls and shop till you drop or your credit card catches on fire. Here you will find everything you need along with plenty of things you never knew you needed!

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (62)

Siam is the place to stay if you want to shop in air-conditioned fashionable shopping malls, go to the cinemas and eat at cool pubs and restaurants.

But the Siam area isn’t just about malls; Siam Square has been completely renovated and turned into a hub of small shops and eateries. On the weekends, the area becomes a walking street filled with performers, musicians, food trucks, and people. It is very popular among trendy young Thais who flock here, searching the small shops for vintage and funky clothes.

At the nearby Jim Thompson House Museum, you can learn about Thai Silk and the man that made it world-famous on a guided tour through this well-preserved traditional Thai house.

Things To See And Do In Siam Area

  • Shopping
Shop and dine at this area’s many fashionable shopping malls, such as Siam Paragon, Central World, and Central Chitlom.
  • Jim Thompson`s House
Get a feel for how it was to live in old Bangkok and visit the lovely Jim Thompson House, a traditional Thai house/ museum. Jim Thompson was the man who made Thai silk world-famous, and his house is today a museum.
  • Apple Central World
Apple’s largest flagship store in Thailand opened its doors outside Central World Shopping Center in 2020.
  • Siam Square Walking Street
Siam Square’s new Walking Street is a cool addition to the city that might make you think you’re in Tokyo for a minute 🙂 The street is closed to cars in the evenings (after 3 pm on weekdays and 11 am on weekends), turning it into a lively walking street lined with shops and restaurants, as well as musicians and performers from the nearby university.
  • Cinemas
See the newest blockbuster films at the many modern cinemas in this area. Films are usually shown in their original language with Thai subtitles, and there are plenty of screens to choose from, including special luxury theaters, 4D, and even Imax.
  • Food Courts
All the large shopping malls have great food courts with a bewildering selection of affordable food from all over the world.
  • MBKShopping Mall
Experience Thai teenagers going shopping crazy at MBK – Bangkok’s oldest shopping mall.
  • Thai boxing
Check out the free MBK Thai boxing fights every last Wednesday of the month outside the MBK shopping mall. Great fun!
  • Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World
Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World – is one of the world’s biggest aquariums and is located on the ground level of the Siam Paragon shopping mall.
  • Madame Tussauds Bangkok
Madame Tussauds– Bangkok’s branch of the famous wax figure museum, is located on the 6th floor of the Siam Discovery shopping mall.
  • Ice Skating
Go ice skating (Yep, you read right: ICE skating) at the skating rink inside Central World shopping mall (ground floor).

What’s the catch?

The Siam area is quite busy and crowded, especially on the weekends when all the locals come here for shopping and to just hang around and meet friends.

It can be challenging to find excellent and authentic Thai food here. The best dining experiences here are food courts and restaurants, mainly inside or connected to the many shopping malls, like the Groove dining area in Central World shopping mall (ground floor), which has many fashionable international restaurants.

A welcome newcomer among Siam’s upper-end hotels, the Chatrium Grand opened its door in late 2022. After spending a few weeks exploring the countryside, we decided to treat ourselves to a couple of nights here. From the moment we stepped inside the grand lobby, we knew we’d made a great choice.

Our room, a Deluxe Twin Room, was spacious (46 sqm), modern, and beautifully designed, with super comfortable beds, large screen tv, and large windows with breathtaking views of Bangkok’s skyline. There is even a voice-activated AI assistant, which was a first for us! Pretty cool!

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (64)

The bathroom is equally spacious and has a separate shower area and a deep free-standing bathtub. We loved the little touches like the super soft bathrobes and the skincare products from Panpuri, Maria’s favorite Thai brand. The hotel spa by Thann was not open yet when we stayed here.

Other highlights were the complimentary mini-bar filled with sodas and local snacks, and especially the chocolate treats and macrons beautifully presented in wooden bamboo boxes.

But what really sold us was the swimming pool area on the 7th floor. It’s one of the best we’ve seen anywhere in Bangkok! The large pool is surrounded by many comfortable sunbeds set among green bushes, perfect for a relaxing afternoon. There is also a poolside restaurant (Flow) and a French restaurant that, when we stayed there in January 2023, wasn’t quite ready yet.

Add to that luxurious, comfortable room, friendly service, a fantastic breakfast buffet, an excellent fitness center, and did I mention the amazing pool (!). And while it certainly isn’t cheap, it is much more reasonably priced than some of its neighbors and, in our opinion, just as good.

6. Chinatown Area

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (72)

Why Stay In Chinatown?

Staying in Chinatown used to be the sole domain of budget travelers. But, the recent influx of more upscale boutique hotels is bringing more visitors to this lively and colorful part of town. Two new metros (MRT) stations, Wat Mangkon and Sam Yot, which opened in 2019, have made Chinatown much more accessible.

Chinatown positively bursts with energy, sounds, smells, and colorful neon signs. Most of the action centers around Yaowarat Road, and this area comes alive in the evenings when thousands of Bangkokians come here to feast on world-class street food. Here you can find everything from mouth-wateringly fresh seafood to roasted duck, dim sum, and traditional desserts.

Chinatown is one of the oldest areas in Bangkok and was first inhabited by Chinese traders, even before Bangkok became Thailand’s capital in 1782. Ducking into the narrow alleys and streets feels like stepping back in time and witnessing a bit of Bangkok’s past.

Chinatown’s buildings are old, and many are built in the traditional Chinese architecture style with small stores that still sell traditional Chinese goods like tea, herbs, and spices, as well as street-side noodles cafes and bustling markets, unchanged for decades.

However, while traditional stores still dominate, things are changing. The area around Soi Nana (not to be confused with the one in Sukhumvit) and Talad Noi down by the river have become home to some of Bangkok’s hippest coffee shops, bars, and clubs. Abandoned buildings are being given new life and attract a new youthful crowd.

The eclectic mix of the traditional and the hippest new is fascinating and makes Chinatown Bangkok’s most exciting neighborhood. Surprises are around every corner in Chinatown!

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (74)

While Chinatown has always been known as a great place to find budget accommodation, there are now more options than ever, including some of Bangkok’s coolest and most unique boutique hotels.

Things To See And Do In Chinatown

  • Wat Tramit Temple & The Golden Buddha
Marvel at the Golden Buddha (Phra Phuttha Maha Suwana Patimakon), a five-meter tall Buddha solid gold statue that weighs 5,5 tons! It was discovered that the figure was made of gold when it was accidentally dropped during transportation, and the plaster that covered it fell off.
  • Sampeng Market
The narrow lanes surrounding Sampeng Square form Chinatown’s biggest and most popular market. Here you will find every trinket known to man. Navigating these narrow lanes can be challenging, but just go with the flow, have fun, and enjoy the craziness. You can make a good deal on Chinese goods like tea, spices, and pottery.
  • Street Food
Chinatown is the best place to enjoy world-class street food in Bangkok.Have a bowl of delicious Chinese noodles and dumplings at one of the many street-side restaurants.
  • See the old authentic Bangkok
Walk the narrow alleyways and take in the smells, sounds, and colors of traditional old Thai/ Chinese culture and life in the Talad Noi neighborhood. Take a guided walking tour and learn more about this area.
  • Hip Coffe shops, Bars, and Nightclubs
In recent years cool cafes, nightclubs, and restaurants have been opening up across Chinatown, injecting new life into old abandoned buildings. Our favorites include The Wildflower Cafe (delicious cakes!), Mother Roaster for coffee, Teens of Thailand, and Tep Bar for late nights.
  • Little India
Explore Little India, just a short walk from Chinatown.

What`s The Catch?

Some streets and buildings are poorly maintained and have a bit of a run-down feel. Central Chinatown is extremely busy and may feel overwhelming, but you can easily escape the crowds by exploring the Talad Noi neighborhood along the river.

There is no Skytrain, but two new MRT stations, Wat Mangkon, and Sam Yot, on the blue MRT line have made it much easier to get to and from Chinatown.

The Mustang Blu
Mustang Blu is perfect for anyone looking for a unique boutique hotel with tons of charm and history.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (75)

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (76)

This narrow Flatiron style building is originally from the late 1800s and has served as, among other things, a bank and a massage parlor before standing empty and abandoned for decades.

Lovingly renovated by owner and fashion designer Ananda Chalardcharoen, Mustang Blu marries raw vintage esthetics with modern comfort. With enormous green palms, wooden floorboards, high ceilings complete with original columns, and grand staircases, it is hard to imagine a more Instagram-friendly hotel.

The hotel’s ten rooms come in two layouts and carry the same whimsical industrial design aesthetic with antique furniture, vintage books, a large wooden bed, and a large free-standing bathtub. Be aware that, as with any old building, the walls are not particularly soundproof, so it might not be ideal if you’re a light sleeper.

We had a lovely (although somewhat pricy) lunch at the hotel’s restaurant, and we hope to stay here on our next visit to Bangkok. The Mustang Blu is genuinely something special.

Shanghai Mansion
Shanghai Mansion is the trendiest boutique hotel in Chinatown at the moment. The Shanghai of the 1930s inspires the hotel’s decor, and they have really nailed the look if you ask me.

We booked a Deluxe Double Room for two nights, one of their larger room types of 39 sqm. Loved the elegant decor, especially the deep bathtub. We were also pleasantly surprised by how quiet it was despite the hotel’s location in the heart of Chinatown’s most popular area.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (79)

The hotel offers unique complimentary experiences, where you can choose one experience per stay night. We did their guided walking tour of Chinatown, which we found to be an excellent introduction to Chinatown and the free Chinese Dim Sum High Tea serving. The third option is a free Thai massage at the hotel spa.

The hotel’s restaurant, The Red Rose, offers up-scale dining should you get tired of the street food. Overall, we found the Shanghai Mansion to be a fantastic relaxing base from which to explore Chinatown and its street food.

ASAI Bangkok Chinatown
We had initially only booked ASAI for a couple of days but ended up staying for a week! It’s the sort of place that Chinatown needs, with minimalistic but modern, elegant, and comfortable rooms at a great price.

We booked a Comfy Twin Courtyard Room (19 sqm). Although it was on the smaller side, it had a smart layout that made it feel comfortable and roomy, after all.

There is a communal area with a bar, restaurant, co-working space, and a large airy seating area surrounded by green plants.

Other highlights for us were the hotel staff, who gave us insider tips on local sights and restaurants, and the surprisingly decent breakfast. There is no swimming pool, but there is a fitness room. The shopping mall downstairs, I’m Chinatown Mall, is handy for shopping essentials, drinks, and snacks (there is a big 7-Eleven in the basem*nt) and has several restaurants. We even found a branch of our favorite Thai tea shop ChaTraMu there. Yay! 🙂

The Quarter Hualamphong by UHG
If you are looking for something a little more upscale than Chinatown’s average guesthouses and hostels, this Western-style hotel may be just what you are looking for. It’s close to Hua Lampong MRT Station, making it easy to get around Bangkok. There is a rooftop terrace with great views, and they recently built a swimming pool.

The Unforgotten B&B
The Unforgotten B&B is a slightly quirky, charming boutique hotel located right around the corner from the Golden Buddha Temple. If you prefer your hostels filled with character, history, and helpful, friendly hosts, this old home converted into a B&B is just perfect.

Every room is unique and furnished with a mix of Chinese antiques and a dash of Victorian inspiration. Of course, modern comforts such as air-con and wifi are all present as well. The included breakfast is quite excellent. You can walk to the Hua Lumpong MRT station in about five minutes or the center of Chinatown in less than ten minutes.

PhotoHostel
In this beautifully renovated 200-year-old Taiyuan house, dutch photographer Kars Tuinder has realized his vision of a cafe, hostel, and photo gallery under one roof. The PhotoCafe is well worth a stop, even if you’re not staying here.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (82)

There are three types of rooms available – Deluxe Double Room with Shower (26 sqm), Deluxe Double Room with Bath (32 sqm), and four-person rooms (27 sqm) with bunk beds that can either be used as dorms or family rooms. All rooms have private bathrooms and air conditioning, and there is a communal area with a washer and dryer. On the top floor, there is a cozy rooftop garden.

The hostel is located right in the middle of the Talad Noi area, the most exciting part of Chinatown, in our opinion. The owner and manager, Kars, is a super friendly guy and also arranges photo tours of Chinatown. We hope to join him for a photo tour next time we’re in Bangkok. Kars showed us around the hostel, and we loved it and plan on staying here soon.

Tian Tian Hostel
Tian Tian Hostel checks all the right boxes with its newly renovated, cozy, well-decorated, clean rooms (private and dorms), a friendly host, and a great location in the center of Chinatown´s most vibrant area. Norn Yaowarat Hotel
Norn Yaowarat Hotel is a fairly new, bright, and fresh budget hotel with a fantastic location in Soi, Texas, surrounded by the best of Chinatown´s street food. Both dorm and private rooms are available, and the price includes a surprisingly good complimentary breakfast.

All rooms are sound isolated and spotlessly clean, with air-conditioning and free Wi-fi, while private rooms also have a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom. Some rooms even have a balcony! The staff is super helpful and speaks English quite well, and there is a cool little coffee shop on the first floor.

Riverview Residence
Riverview is an iconic, if somewhat run-down, budget guesthouse in Chinatown, with both dorm rooms and private rooms available. The rooms are simple, clean, and spacious, but the bathrooms could do with a renovation. If you wish to experience Chinatown’s classic backpacker vibe, the Riverview is one of the area’s few remaining iconic hostels.

The guesthouse is definitely showing its age, but the rooftop restaurant is still a cool place to have a drink while watching the sunset over the river. The river ferry station Pier 4 is very close to the guesthouse, so you can easily take the ferry from here to famous attractions such as Wat Arun.

7. Pratunam Area

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (83)

Why Stay In Pratunam Area?

We have stayed in this area several times, and we like it because it`s close to great shopping and within walking distance of the Siam area but cheaper than Siam when it comes to hotel prices. It’s markets and street food also have a more authentic Thai feel.

The Pratunam area has Thailand`s second tallest building, the 88 floors high Baiyoke Sky Hotel, a Bangkok landmark that can be seen from far away.

Pratunam is most famous for its Pratunam market, the largest clothes market in Bangkok. It’s more of a local market that doesn’t see as many tourists and is great fun to walk around. It’s meant to be a wholesale market, but you can make some bargains here, just remember to haggle.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (84)

Things To See And Do In Pratunam Area

  • Pratunam Market
You can do some great bargains at the huge Pratunam Market. Here you can buy clothes and accessories at wholesale prices.
  • Pantip Plaza Shopping Mall
Shop IT equipment, electronics, and gadgets till you drop at Pantip Plaza, a vast five-floor electronic mall. A fun visit for us tech geeks!
  • Victory Monument
A large military monument with a Western-inspired design and one of Bangkok’s major traffic intersections. Around the statue, you can find yummy Pad Thai, Lad Na, and other typical Thai dishes sold at a low price.

What`s The Catch?

The streets in this area can be pretty crowded and chaotic, especially on weekends. There is also quite heavy amounts of traffic. Pratunam used to have a lot of street vendors. But, the Bangkok government has banned them from operating on the sidewalks, making the area feel a bit lifeless, especially after dark.

There is a significant redevelopment project in the works for Pratunam, and it will be interesting to see how the area changes over the coming years.

VIE Hotel Bangkok, MGallery
The VIE Hotel Bangkok is a small luxury boutique hotel located just a few minutes away from Siam’s shopping malls and the Ratchathewi Skytrain station. A long-standing Bangkok favorite, it’s starting to show its age a little. But it is ageing with grace and has maintained its most important asset, the world-class friendly service.

The rooms are very spacious by modern standards, with floor-to-ceiling windows, and while some of the decors are starting to look a little worn, they are very comfortable. There is a swimming pool on the 6th floor and a spacious and well-equipped fitness center. Breakfast is excellent, with lots of Western and Asian dishes on offer.

8. The International Airport Suvarnabhumi Area

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (85)

Bangkok has two airports – Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK) Airport. Suvarnabhumi Airport is Bangkok’s main international airport, and this is where you will arrive if you are coming from Europe, Australia, or the USA.

Don Mueang Airport was Bangkok’s main airport until 2006 when Suvarnabhumi Airport opened. Don Mueang Airport is used for domestic flights, as well as some low-fare international Asian flights, like AirAsia, Nok Air, and Lion Air.

Both Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport are a bit far from downtown Bangkok, about a 45 min drive from central Bangkok.

Why Stay Close To Suvarnabhumi Airport?

The only reason to stay in the area around Suvarnabhumi Airport is if you’re transiting through Bangkok, have an early plane to catch, or arrive in Bangkok late and don’t want to head into the city immediately. Or if you’re a golf enthusiast and want to stay at one of the area’s golf course resorts. This is not the area to stay in if you want to see Bangkok and its sights.

Where To Stay In Bangkok - Our Favourite Areas & Hotels (86)

The Suvarnabhumi Airport is about a 45-60 minutes drive from the main center of Bangkok, depending on the traffic. You can take the Skytrain – the “City Line,” which takes about 26 minutes from/to the “Phaya Thai station.” It stops at six stations along the way. You can also take the Skytrain Express Line, which only takes 15 minutes to/from “Makassan station.” The Skytrain operates from 6 a.m. to midnight. For more info, check the Airport Rail Link website.

There are some excellent luxury hotels in the area that, at times, offer excellent value for your money.

Things To See And Do In the Suvarnabhumi Airport Area

Not much is happening in this area, and there is not much to see or do here apart from staying at your hotel. There is Mega Bangna – a vast shopping mall with 400 shops, and Central Village, a luxury outlet store with 300 high-end stores. If you have more time, you could visit Samut Prakan Ancient Siam, a vast outdoor museum about 40 minutes’ drive from the airport.

What`s The Catch?

The Suvarnabhumi Airport area is pretty far away from the city center of Bangkok (45 – 60 minutes by taxi), and there is not much to see or do out here in this area. Many of the hotels in this area offer complimentary shuttle service to the Skytrain station, from which it is easy to head into town (30 minutes).

The Grand Fourwings Convention Hotel
We stayed at this 5-star hotel on our way from Vietnam to Railay Beach in the South of Thailand when we missed our connecting flight from Bangkok to Railay (Krabi airport). Thai Airways sent us to this hotel, and we loved it from the moment we stepped into the lobby of Grand Four Wings.

The lobby and reception area are huge, and so are the rooms. Unfortunately, we only stayed here one night, and we had to get up early to take the first plane to Krabi, so we did not get the chance to try the swimming pool. We had a look at it, and it’s excellent, with a great lounge area where you can sit and have some sun as well as enjoy the view of the Bangkok skyline.

The dinner and breakfast were delicious, with a great variety of food, both Western and Asian. And the best – they had a huge chocolate fountain! We could chocolate dip fruits, marshmallows, and sweets all evening! So much fun! 🙂

The rooms are spacious (34-56 sqm), and the complimentary breakfast buffet starting at 3 am is a huge plus if you have an early plane to catch.
